Italy and Croatia via Switzerland 2025

The train to Junfrau joch is now a bargain £225 each. It’s hard (impossible) to justify that for us unfortunately.
Wow! Seem to remember it was £30-50ish each when we did it years ago. That was from Kleine Scheidegg. It’s obviously just got far too popular like many of these places.

Next time you arrange a trip Si maybe we should all go in convoy 😬 .
We could have a stand by vehicle waiting in the wings for anyone who breaks down ....you get to drive a biege transit van or something similar 🤔

Yesterday we had a great walk along part of the Eiger Ultra Path up to a cable car station and got the cable car down, and had a beer on the way, and made a plan.
Switzerland was supposed to be a stopover but it’s so easy to get mesmerised and stay.
We move on today and Switzerland will be a seperate holiday that we plan specifically with its own budget. Maybe next spring.IMG_3697.webpIMG_3725.webpIMG_3731.webp

Saturday we left Grindelwald and drove down to Interlaken for a walk round and some brunch.IMG_8869.jpeg
Then went over to Brienz and had a walk along the lake and a small beer. There was a festival on with live music.
Then it was off over the alps towards Italy.

Ended up going over the Furka pass, which wasn’t on our route but I could see it climbing away into the distance so off I went and let google maps sort out the rest.

Sure it wasn’t the furket pass? As in furket it’s there let’s do it 😄

Saturday night was spent on a car park in Bellinzona. Wasn’t planned, it due to the excessive time spent driving over the Alps we couldn’t get to our intended destination.

Sunday morning we drove past lake Lugano and Como and get to the Area Sosta Camper at Bergamo before lunch.
Bergamo is lovely and we spent the afternoon shopping and eating our way round a food festival, and the evening out in the old town.

Monday was a full day in Bergamo. Mainly up in the old town and up on the funicular to the castle (nothing to see really, view was great though).IMG_3832.webp

Tuesday was a very impromptu trip to Lago d’Iseo and Camping Sassabanek.
Campsite was big but ok. Very peaceful and had access to the lakeside.IMG_3850.webpIMG_3857.webp
Went into Iseo in the evening. Wow. Full of lovely little streets lined with very nice restaurants and a couple of lake front bars. One of the nicest little towns I’ve been to.

How far into Croatia are you heading?

We are in the Dubrovnik riviera at the moment (not camping though) and it's very nice but a bit pricey. Current record is 9euro for a beer.

Keep going to Montenegro, much cheaper.

@doncarlyon - whereabouts are you? We're heading out to Croatia on Sunday but other than Somewhereville haven't got a final destination. The cost of living is my only real issue with the country but I'm hoping it's still the case that things get a bit cheaper once you get away from Dubrovnik etc. The last couple of times that we've visited has been in the van but just before covid, we did a package to a hotel on it's own island in Istria and even then a bottle of beer was about ¢9 in the hotel but it got cheaper once you got to the mainland (the hotel also had it's own free boat going back and forth between the Island and Rovinj). That said, even with higher prices, IMHO it still beats the cr4p out of going to a lot of other european beach type destinations.

Wot @DXX sed - but I hear it's getting more expensive there too. We drove through Montenegro on the way to Greece a couple of years ago and loved it, especially as it hadn't been on our radar at all until then except as part of the route to Greece. The only problem was that our car insurance didn't cover us there and we had been advised that the border people checked your papers (inc. the original V5C) and then pointed you to an insurance company so you could buy some 3rd party cover before they let you in. When we actually got there, the border guard gave our passports a very cursory glance before stamping them but didn't look at the car papers. When I asked where to buy insurance, he shrugged and said we didn't need it and It was the same in Albania, I'd have thought that somebody would have seen insurance as a potential 'nice little earner' but no-one seemed in the least bit interested. It did however play on our minds all the time that we were in either country until we got to Greece in one piece and are back in the EU with associated green card cover. It also didn't help that the driving standards in Albania were terrible (and the road surfaces even worse) so much so that my wife insisted on catching a ferry back from Greece to Italy for the return journey.

We are in Srebreno, about 15mins from Dubrovnik.

There were places in Dubrovnik cheaper than here to be honest. Some were around 5.50 for a beer.

@doncarlyon. 10, maybe 11 years ago, we had a holiday at a hotel in Plat which I think is not far from you which was nice as you could easily get to Dubrovnik or Cavtat by bus or water taxi - it was long enough ago that a building just up the hill from our hotel was still showing battle damage. Even closer is a campsite called Camping Kate which we've not stayed in but did go and have a look a couple of years ago as we were driving past it. Got chatting to some brits there who rated it highly. If we get that far on the forthcoming trip, that's probably where we will end up.
