Intermittent hard starting.

Dont have vcds, but i may ask my indy to look into it if a new fuel filter doesent help. He has vcds. It runs perfectly once started, and has had an easy, looked after life. Since the vid earlier today it started fine and had multiple start ups inc with stop start with no prob.

example CXEB low compression. . .

The mad thing with my CXEB was that it run fine, no loss of power. . . but it started to intermittent HARD START.

i assumed it might be the HPFP, then one morning it just CRANK-NO START. so i called in the ALL-IN boys.

long story short it was low on compression across ALL 4 pots!!! - yet run perfectly.

the CXEB engine is known for it - - ended up with a new engine via ALL-IN.

not saying thats your issue, but as part of the testing the in cylinder compression test needs to be done at some point.

fairly easy apparently, the tester screws in the glow plug ports.

get some vid clips of that too. . . . the good starts,

as it shows the other aspect of when it ok, its starts "like this" as all vans have a slightly difference characteristics.

maybe just do a 2min vid clip of: 5 crank start run for 10sec, cycles. - that will help show whats it like normaly versus crank-nostart.

well, as a starter, i would check and inspect the leak off return pipes for splits or cracking etc.
remember a leaking return leak off pipe will ( probably ) not show a diesel leak.
if its perished the problem is that air ( at atmospheric pressure )leaks into the system , not diesel leaking out of the pipes

a leak off pipework kit might be around 20 pounds.they just pull off and push on.
im not suggesting you play parts darts ,
if they were 200 quid then its hard to justify replacing them 'just incase it might be'.
but for 20 pounds , whats to lose?

Yes, i had a look but they are mostly hidden by the charge cooler. Its deteriorated noticably since the cambelt was done a couple of days ago, so i think i will go back with all the useful info from here and ask him to have a look for me.

Oh , didn't know it has a top mounted intercooler ,ala subaru , just assumed it was front mounted or the cambelt has just been done a few days ago lol.
Note to self. Read the thread ha

5 Cold starts, seems so intermittent, a couple of hours ago it was fine.

nice vid clips and will be helpfull for the tech.

i think id be looking at fuel rail pressure.

to see how quick it builds.. . .( should rise within a few rpms)

there is also a rail pressure reg valve to look at.

also would check the cam/crank signals to make sure they are present.

My mechanic noticed mine seemed to labour when starting so its booked in for the glow plugs to be changed.

Glow plugs will show up when cold.... But not a hot start,

An update, but not a good one. Timing has been checked following belt change, and was found to be spot on. Had the egr renewed with a genuine one, but the fault is exactly the same ! The place that fitted the egr suggest getting live vcds data once the fault is happening for the next move.

One thing i have noticed is that it seems to be regenerating often. Could a blocked or restricted dpf be causing the difficult warm / hot starting, but fine from cold ? The last couple of times i've noticed a slight unevenness when its regening whilst idling which i've not noticed before. Any recommendations for somewhere that would sort this appreciated. Nottingham based. Thanks.

I've just connected a clear pipe to the fuel filter outlet (the middle one). Nothing comes out at all when the ignition is turned on. The only time it comes out is when i briefly operated the starter. Is this normal ? I thought that after a fuel filter change, turning the ignition on a few times was supposed to prime the filter ?

no, the lift pump doent run on ignition, - it runs on the RPM signal.

ir cranking

....

you can run the left pump from vcds or carista.

or the best way is to fill the new derv filter with diesel when you install it.

I'd change the filter as suggested, get your mate with Vcds to run pump cycles to bleed,
Then do data log with HPFP, injection time and add pre and post dpf pressure sensors to the log, MMI has shared the guide on how to do it, that's the best place to start, if the HPFP is getting lazy or had contamination that will show in the logs.

I have what is hopefully a final update on this saga. I ended up with random ABS light and stop start error warnings as well as the poor starting. I took it to P Atkins diesel specialists at Mansfield. It was the starter motor at fault. Apparently they can suffer with heat soak, and lose efficiency when hot. Hope this helps someone else in the future. Got to say Atkins were brilliant, very professional.
