How to remove T6.1 steering wheel

Hi guys.

I'm looking to remove my steering wheel on my 2023 T6.1.

Any tutorial videos about?

The reason I need to remove it is because I need to remove the plastic shroud around the steering column so I can slide in a small battery pack in that gap for my dashcam.

You can remove both covers top and bottom without removing the wheel. Top cover pops off and bottom has 3 torx screws; one from under and two on the corners at the top. Just turn the wheel with top cover off and youll see the bolts. Undo one then turn the wheel the other way to expose the other one.

Thats great. Less work for me.

I've unclipped top shroud. I've also unscrewed the bottom screw. I had a peak at the 2 screws either side of top of bottom shroud (each corner) they looked as if the only way of accessing them is removing the steering wheel.

Now, it was just a peek. Are they easily accessible with a normal straight torx screw driver? I'll have another look tomorrow.

I managed to get mine off no probs:think smile bounce:. if you have long enough torx you will be able to reach and undo both of them one by one without fouling anything.

Hi, how does one pop off the top cover (2018 T6) I have the soft leathercloth piece unclipped but I am afraid of breaking the top cover. It seems very secure. What is the secret to popping it? Thanking you in anticipation

Got it off with trim tools but cannot see how to get bottom one off without taking steering wheel off which I don’t want to do. I need to replace the ignition switch

Hi DMDBrown. I also need to replace the ignition switch in my T6. Did you manage it without removing the steering wheel in the end? Many thanks

Hi rosscoid,

Fiat of all, make sure that the ignition switch is indeed faulty. Mine wasn’t!

I did manage to replace the ignition switch without removing the steering wheel.

I managed to remove the top and bottom covers. I first used trim tools to remove the top cover.

To remove the bottom cover I had to break the two little right-angle plastic brackets through which the screws hold on this cover. It wouldn’t come off otherwise. I still haven’t got it back on again. I need to replace the plastic brackets - perhaps 3D prints.

All the best!

Thanks for the update! I looked at it tonight and agree that it's not possible to remove the bottom cover without removing the wheel because it has to come forwards (towards the driver) to detach from the plastic brackets you mention, and it can't come forwards because the wheel is in the way! I'm going to look at removing the wheel rather than breaking the brackets I think.

Regarding the ignition switch, I am assuming the fault lies there having investigated all other basic options (as I see it). When removing the key from the ignition the van no longer kills the switched live to the audio system (i.e. the radio doesn't automatically turn off). And additionally I am unable to lock the van using the key fob (which I assume is because the van thinks the key is still in the ignition). I guess it's possible that there's wiring fault or something gone wrong in the electronics systems - but perhaps more likely just a simple physical fault in the ignition barrel/switch? That's what I'm hoping anyway.

Thanks again for the rapid response. All the best

There’s no need to remove the steering wheel at all or break anything while removing the bottom trim. I’ve done it multiple times. You can access the two screws with longer torx screwdriver by turning the wheel to expose each one of them left and right.
And then you have one hidden underneath by the column release lever.

Reaching the torx screws is no problem, I've removed them. But I can see no way for the bottom trim to come off as it has to move forwards (to come away from the torx screw fixing points) and the wheel is simply in the way. Perhaps something is different in the way our trims are attached (I have a 2019 T6). Wheel's coming off this weekend, I'll take some pictures for the sake of anyone else that stumbles into this thread in the future.

Not best pic but you can see wheel is still on and trim is off. After bolt removal only thing holding it is the rubber cover around the ignition. It can be gently manoeuvred out. Perhaps T6 is different but I assumed it’s same 🤔. I think rubber ignition cover is larger for sure to T6.1 that’s all I thought is different.
