Steering rack removal required?

Hi all,

My T32 van has recently developed an issue with the steering with the following issues -
- lumpy steering with inconsistent resistance. Stiff at some points of the lock but loose at others.
- rubbing/rumbling noise when steering coming from directly below the steering wheel (not top mount area)

I've had it up on a ramp and can hear a rumbly noise from where the steering column goes into the steering rack when steering.

The boot that protects the bottom of the steering column has been split for a while (photo attached), so my question is what is the most likely cause of the above issues? Is it likely to be the universal joint?

If it is the rack, does anyone have any advice on removal?

Managed to get the rack out and sending it off to SSL Automotive for a rebuild.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement boot for the steering column to rack universal joint?

Does it have a part number on it? Most likely easiest to get one from your VW dealer to ensure correct part.

Definately just go to VW for that boot. That's what I'll be doing tomorrow.

I'm in the middle of taking my rack off but I don't understand what is meant when people are talking about marking the pinion? I don't get it. Did you "mark" yours or just remove the bolt and slide off?

Hope it went alright. I ended up having to take the ARB bush and drop link off to get it out. I didn't mark the pinion but I'm guessing it's to make sure it's in the same position as it was when it was taken off.

That boot was £18 from VW which is the cheapest I could find it. If anyone needs one in the future the part number is 7E0419069A.
