High End Stereo With OEM Head Unit?

Is it possible to have a good quality high end stereo system but leave the OEM head unit in place?

I suppose I’m asking, is it possible to bypass the audio from the OEM head unit or not?

I’ve seen DSP’s (Digital Signal Processors) mentioned but not sure if this is the answer.

I'm interested in this although swapping out the stock 6.5" door speakers for decent Audison AP8 8" speakers and sound deadening the doors has made a marked improvement in audio quality, plus playing flac audio from foobar on my phone even though it's via Bluetooth.
I like the idea of DSP for separate amplified channels to tweets, mids and possibly a sub.

Yes it is , 50% of our audio upgrades use the OEM unit, drop us a pm or call and we can go through options

How hard was swapping the 6.5” for 8”?

Re your question the answer is definitely yes, as the DSP can iron out a lot of the crap introduced by the OEM system, without replacing it, and you can also introduce direct high quality inputs that bypass the unit altogether, without removing it. I used a plug and play system in last van but Chris at Dav-tec is in the process of installing a high end system in my van as we speak, so would definitely recommend a listen of the demo van (a lot of things similar to the setup I am going for).

@borat If I'm honest there's a bit of farting about as you need to replace the flimsy plastic top hat moulding and speaker that VW use to make a 6.5" speaker fill an 8" hole in the door.
I think it was @Pewt who told me you can get a solid printed 8" speaker ring from @Dav-Tec that holds your new larger speaker over the door hole but me being a cheapskate made my own out of layers of ply and sealed with lacquer.
No worse than back in the day car audio builds, it is worth putting some form of rain shield over the back of the speakers as both my VW speakers were either worked, left one or on their way with the rusting magnet becoming unglued from the magnet pole piece and jamming the voice coil up.
