Gears 🤯

Bombing down motorway fine, come off motorway and go to 4th gear, back to 5th but gear won’t change. Eventually hobbled to campsite, plenty o’ clanking and a faint burning smell. Can’t reverse either.

AA arrives and says all cables associated with gears in engine are working fine. Gears feel ok when not moving 🤯. Here’s what AA said “Suspect internal fault inside gearbox member reported hard to get in 5th and reverse. Sprayed selector could get gears but when attempting to set off vehicle didnt want to set off then when attempting to reverse vehicle felt locked in two gears at once.”

Getting recovered on Saturday.

T6, 6 years old, 35k miles. What do you reckon and how much to repair?

Bare minimum a new gearbox, I wouldn’t replace the DMF, clutch or slave cylinder at 35K.
You don’t mention if it’s 5 or 6 gears or automatic or manual.
Any running gear modifications?
Gearboxes don’t just fail at 35K miles without a reason, not even the renown 5sp manual.
Does the odometer milage match the MOT history and ECU data?

5 gears. All mileages match

Assuming no warranty you have a choice of new, re-conditioned or used.
Obviously the further you go right the cheaper it is but it comes with more risk.
Try getting quotes from a well reviewed VW independent or gearbox specialists, I would avoid VW dealerships, they will only want to sell new parts and it’s safe to assume that the price will be much higher than an independent.
Price isn’t everything, take a close look at the warranty T&Cs especially with re-con units, don’t expect warranty with a doner used unit.
