Fuel Pumps Nightmare

Hi all, new to the site so be gentle!! I have a 2010 140bhp T30 that has been wonderful for 140k miles but has recently been giving me problems... juddering & a whining noise from the engine saw me take it to my local garage ( who has always been brilliant!!) to be told it’s the fuel pump... his up to date diagnostic machine couldn’t determine which pump, so I changed both, the main one ( £1000 part) and the £150 ish one near the battery. The van is running fine but there is still a whining noise coming from the new ‘smaller’ pump... ( as if it’s straining!) He’s now said the pump IN the fuel tank could be at fault but can’t be sure?? I’m £1600 in & this next pump is a £200 part & cant be certain it will work... Has anyone suffered the same issues & can possibly put my mind at rest or anyone have any ideas what to do.... any reply will be appreciated, Thanks

The T6 wasn't available in 2010.... if it behaves like my old touareg you should be able to hear the lift pump run for a short while as soon as you unlock and open the drivers door. You could also just turn on the ignition and hear it run before you start the engine.

I had fuel pump issues in my T5 and was in a similar situation, chasing the fault ended up costing me £2.5k come the end and was left with a partially working fuel gauge

A bit late now, but I would have taken it to a diesel fuel system specialist rather than your local garage. Local garages are great for simple service type items and their diagnostic tools will tell them what the engine sensors are saying, however you do need a detailed knowledge of common rail fuel systems to interpret this data. Main dealers are generally useless on fuel systems too.
