Front tyres - heavy wear on shoulders

Hi, I bought my 20plate T6.1 Kombi in March, it’s got a full Leighton conversion and rolling on 20in 275/45 R20. i’ ve covered 5k+ miles in that time and I’ve just come back from a camping Holiday in France. I notice a rumbling noise at lower speed and I notice the outside edge of the passenger side front tyre shows excessive wear.

The tyres are cheap, they were on it when I bought the van and are in need of replacement, it looks item something is chewing the outside edges, but only on the passenger side, drivers side is fine. Can anyone recommend a good place to get the tracking and camber alignment checked, I’ve seen the Huntsman system Recommended, I live in Surrey near jct 10 of the M25 and A3.

Also any tyre recommendations for this size, I typically avoid budget tyres as I just don’t trust them.

I’ve also seen recommendations to have the suspension bushes checked, as the van is lowered, approx 50mm should the bushes be upgraded?

Looking like a really poor alignment. Get a full geometry check done using Hunter or similar. Kwik Fit have the Hunter set up.
You are correct cheap tyres are cheap for a reason. Accelera being the worst! I find Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric to be a superb tyre both in handling comfort and wet weather performance. I run 265 40 20 104Y all around 36-38 psi depending on payload. Good luck

Hi Robert02023

Thanks for the prompt response, I like the Goodyears Eagle F1’s, I fitted them on my previous cars, Octavia vRS and Golf GTD.

Do you know if 265/40 would fit on the Leighton LV-1 rims, would the 10mm difference make a difference to the fittment.

I tried Kwil fit previously for wheel alignment with my Octy when I had tyres fitted but as it had lane control they said they could not do it and it had to go to a main dealer, is this just BS, my van has lane control etc installed.

I think that when people are asking about tyre wear it is good to specify Tyre manufacture, wheel and tyre size rim width and any other modifications to suspension dropping or lifting etcetera and if the vehicle is heavily laden usually. The model type may be useful also because some vehicles performance is different if it is a 4Motion ect.

I have noticed that some of the images of tyres shown by concerned owners appear to be quite well worn anyway regardless of ware pattern and i would have replaced them long before the got to that state anyway. I try to replace tyre long before legal necessity unless their has been a problem with tracking caused by poor roads producing rapid wear

When people change tyres for a different size perhaps increasing the size they really aught to check on a tyre size calculator site if the tyre size is not catered for on the on board sticker, to see what the new tyre pressure aught to be because a new larger size can be a remarkably different pressure from the manufacturer original fit. as has been stated by others tyre pressure is very important.

I don’t know about LV rims. You must cross check rims with tyre fitment size /width etc. I’ve never had any issues with lane departure or front radar when the alignment has been done. My policy is to always keep a keen eye on how the tyres are wearing and check geometry on a regular basis.

Got a similar issue with my Michelin Crossclimate 2 (255/45R18). These have 10k KM (6200 Miles) on them and the shoulder already shows some wearing. Any clue?

PS. I had the same issue with the previous tyres so to avoid this I've been overinflating them (46-50 psi). Apparently doesn't make any difference.

I know I’ve already said this …. Get a full alignment check done. At the same time whilst it’s on the lift, check all bushes and suspension for visible faults. Try running pressures around 38 - 40.

For context I have a 2020 , T6.1 Kombi, T32, 2.0 Bi turbo, 4 motion. It is on 275/40 R20, it’s been lowered approx 50mm. This is based on measurements taken form a standard van, I bought 2nd hand it in March, it has a full Leighton body kit upgraded upgrades which were fitted already. The rims are a staggered fitment, 8.5j front and 10j rear. It had three different brands of tyre fitted all were budget tyres🫣

I went to replace the two front tyres but due to a mismatching speed rating on the rear, one was rated W, they would not fit them so I ended up having all four replaced with Michelin latitude sport 3 this week. Speed rating is a Y

I need to get the tracking checked but now my Adblue is playing up, topped it il yesterday and it hasn’t registered the level, states I have 650miles before no start so it may be getting booked back into VW sooner than planned😏

Once the tracking is checked I’ll update on what the alignment is like

Mechanic says it's usual wear for all-season tyres.... suggests to just rotate tyres every ~10k miles or less. The problem is I trust them very much so I'm a bit puzzled.

Nothing normal about that wear, I have all season tyres and they wear evenly front and rear.
You need an opinion from a tyre specialist.

He may be correct . However I have run all seasons, full winters and summers and never had such an uneven tread wear. I would suggest at the very least the geometry needs checking. I’d be interested to know if you get it resolved. Good luck

Took the van to get 4 wheel Laser alignment done at a local garage. Had an issue they could not get the equipment onto the front wheels, it was a John Beam system I think, and they latch onto the rim of the wheel.

I discovered I have a staggered tyre fittment when the tyres were changes, fronts are 8.5j and rears are 10j, they could latch onto the rear but not the front as the tyres fit differently, they are tighter on the rim at the front and pull outward.

Anyone else had a similar issue and do you know of a particular tracking set up that I need to look for that fits differently onto the wheels/tyres.

If anyone has a recommendation for a Garage to use I’m in Surrey by jct 10 of M25/A3.

Cheers
