Front Offside Clunk

Hi all,

My T30 made a loud clunk from the front offside suspension a couple of times last weekend. Once going over a speed hump and once on a country B-road. It was loaded but not with much - me and my motorcycle, which is less weight than carrying four adults. I felt the clunk through my feet and it was loud enough to be alarming although it only happened twice in a 500 mile round trip. I’ve also noticed that my front tyres appear to be wearing quite quickly and unevenly with slightly more wear on the outside. They’re looking pretty used with only 5000 miles on them - is that normal?

I bought the van from a dealer just over a year ago and got them to fit the VW lowering option (30mm) and Sportline wheels and had no problems till last weekend. The van had its first service last month and everything was fine. It’s booked back into the same dealer in a couple of weeks to get checked out but in the meantime I’m not really driving it.

I’ve read a few threads on other forums that concern me because they’ve said this clunk is pretty normal and therefore acceptable. I’d like to think it isn’t but I don’t know. I don’t have much faith in dealers and I’m half expecting them to tell me there’s nothing wrong. The tyre wear is probably the only evidence that something is or might be. At the time the lowering was done I asked if they checked the wheel alignment afterwards - they don’t and claimed VW say there’s no need to and they never have any problems. I asked them to do it anyway but they forgot and I didn’t get it done.

So it seems like the wheel alignment after lowering was necessary evidenced by the wear on the outside of the front tyres. The clunk may be related to the lowering work - it seems a bit of a coincidence. Before the van goes back to be looked at I’d like to armed with some more knowledge on what is normal and I’d be very grateful to learn from anyone with a similar experience.

A 4 wheel laser alliagnment is the only way to fully check the geometry of the wheels and suspension setup...

Out of spec alignment will show as obvious uneven wear on the tyres.

Tyre pressure is also important for tyre wear.

Outside wear could indicate camber, caster or tow allotment may be out..

Best thing is to take it to a third party place that does 4wheel alaigment and have it tested.... about £50 - £100 from memory.

As for the knock..... that may be you maxing out a bushing causing metal to metal contact on a hard hit.

If you feel it through the body more than the steering then it's more likely antiroll bar/ supsension bushings than steering linkage bushings.

Was it a hard hit both times? And were you on a full lock, or straight ahead steering?

.

Thanks for replying. I don’t think the suspension was hit hard on either occasion it made a noise. The wheels were straight and I was being careful when I went over the speed hump. The second time I think the right side was loaded a bit because of a left turn but it wasn’t extreme.

If the dealer fobs me off I’ll go to an independent for the alignment check as you recommended.

Tyre pressures were good and as specified. The wear in the centre is fine, although about half worn at 5000 miles, it’s just the outside of both fronts that has worn more. It does look like an alignment issue. Is that what you get out of a set of fronts, 10k?

I get about 25 - 30k ish from Tyres

Could be that the springs have not been fitted properly? How long have they been on? I had a spring on a car once that made a horrible clunk every now and then, found out it was broken.

Whenever you make any mods to ride height you must get 4 wheel laser alignment done or will eat through tyres.
