Thanks for your prompt reply , 100 or so miles
Further on had adblu fault distance to refill dropped to 650 miles , reset itself after about 20 miles had the following fault codes when I scanned basic obd2 codes P0401, P204F , P20EE and engine codes 23871 , 31103 ,33262 , could these still be software related or do I have a bigger issue ?

Reactions: mmi
23871 = P0401 EGR System Insufficient Flow
31103 = P20EE SCR NOx Catalyst Bank 1 Efficiency too Low
33262 = P204F Reductant System Performance Bank 1 Malfunction

The first ones are VW codes, P-codes are OBD-II-standard equivalents.

The AdBlue display distance 650 miles was triggered by P204F. The software update should cure false alarms of the fault.

P20EE itself is more or less harmless - just an indication NOx emissions were above threshold. The software update reduces NOx emissions and thus also reduces P20EE faults.

A common reason for P0401 is clogged EGR cooler, however shouldn't be an issue at 9000 miles. Degree of blockage can be estimated by using engines built-in diagnostic routines. E.g.

For code 31103 check out the below thread - apparently nothing too bad. Please post contents of ”Detailed ECU info" -report (under CaristaService menu)” - there has been an engine software update that should make these faults less frequent.

@n10n here is the detailed ECU info: (I copied it and forgot to take a screenshot of how it was split up on the screen. Hope it is readable!)

I checked the website:
And, does it mean 6163 is the latest version, and 4047 is the original - which I have?

The van is due a service, so I guess it will get checked over anyway but I don't like surprises and it's good to be in the know sometimes

This is correct. Please be aware that usually VW does not update anything unless their diagnostics instructions tell them to. So, in your case the active warning light may lead them to update the software but if it's not on when you take the van in they may just shrug it off. Although this one is actually a campaign so in my understanding they should take it on anyway.

Thanks a lot. Yes I’ve read through a few threads now. I wonder if they will try to charge me to update the software.
I’ll update here after.

First I need to do some spark plug diagnostics for the other error! :whistle:
