Engine cut out and steering fail when in reverse or low gears

Hi, We bought our 2018 T6 102 T28 last September, 3 weeks later the engine cut out as I was coming around a bend to stop at traffic lights. Power steering failed and sent me into the opposite lane in front of oncoming traffic. Since then it’s been a consistent intermittent problem…. Happening mainly when driving quite a bit in city traffic. we brought it back to the independent dealer who said it was clutch problems. He changed clutch and flywheel…. Almost immediately it was acting up again, cutting out in low gear when hot, cutting out in reverse etc. Similar to before the clutch change. Brought to main dealer for diagnostics and they said, clutch problems…. Back to the guy who sold it to us, he changed the clutch again, got it back and straight away problems again but Christmas got in the way… eventually got him to take it back in again and his mechanic changed the clutch and flywheel for the third time….guess what? Still the same problems but getting worse because it’s happening practically all the time now. Can anyone shed any light on what is wrong? The cooling fan seems to come on when the problem is happening and doesn’t come on when it isn’t causing bother. Thanks in advance …. I’m at the end of my wits here, I just want to sell it but can’t until sorted. It’s been an expensive ornament for the business because I wouldn’t be able to use it for loads the way it is.

Cooling fan on would suggest it’s doing a dpf regen, this in turn would mean ignition timing was being auto adjusted by ecu to assist raising exhaust temps ?

Not sure if related but could be a factor in your issue ?

Hi Pauly, I am not overly mechanical minded but need to be aware so I don’t get hoodwinked tomorrow, is there an easier way to explain that to me?

Is the a decent VW independent near you, who can do a decent job of recording fault codes ?

Pete

Hi Pete C,

No fault codes coming up. We’ve had it to VW centre and three independents in addition to the independent dealers mechanic

Try driving around with the start stop disabled (press the button after you start) and see if it makes any difference?

So do you think it's stalling or cutting out?

Speak to a solicitor.

May be too late to reject it, but it certainly sounds unfit for purpose, and positively dangerous.

I hope you get this resolved but I'm surprised at the garage's reaction - after the first new clutch and flywheel didn't fix the problem it was unlikely that the second new clutch and flywheel would solve it and extremely unlikely that yet another new clutch and flywheel would solve it. I think it's time they faced reality - it's nothing to do with the clutch, I'm not sure how they ever thought it was.
I recalled reading similar threads on here and found these, some may be relevant;

I suspect there's more than one problem being described in these threads but a faulty fuel metering device crops up more than once.

Hi Loz, Cutting out, it needs a manual key turn to start again.
When it cuts out, do you see anything on the dash go at the same time?
do the dials drop or mfd go out?
do the headlights go out?

I too am surprised sudden stalling has been linked to the clutch. Where is Diagnose Dan when you need him!

when its cut out are you releasing the clutch to try and depress it again as if it was start stop .. when i first experienced this i would reach to the key now i lift clutch and depess it it starts but this morning it seemed to Auto start before i even could do this ..

Thanks DaveD. I’m getting another mechanic to look at it this week and will mention the fuel metering to him to see what he thinks

Hi Loz
it can be quite scary depending where it cuts out so hadn’t been aware really of looking for those reactions. Will do next time it happens. Mainly intent on getting started again to get out of the way of being hit or embarrassment of looking like I stalled!!!

Hi Mud Digger
Tried that theory, definitely not stop start. It always needs the key to restart. I generally turn off stop start now anyway.

If it were mine, I would drive whilst doing some VCDS logging and check some key sensors like crank and cam sensors etc as well as voltage in the engine ecu to rule out a loose fuse/connection or bad relay etc.
A scan recorded at the time of failure might include or rule out some factors.

@CabCraft any update on this, I have the exact same issues as you to the T, seemed to start after a dodgy remap and not long after the remap the clutch and gearbox went, £2800.00 later I'm getting the same issues as you have explained. I don't know if it's down to any of the previous issues or just a whole new problem, it's frickin dangerous, it's stalled on me a lot on roundabouts, but mainly just driving around town, really lumpy, rough idle, I have just replaced the maf sensor hoping that would solve but nope. I'm at a dead end.

Hi all,
was wondering if anyone has found out what is causing the engine cutting out at roundabouts and junctions. I have had it in thoughs places and in traffic, then have to start on the key. I have ask a specialist and the VW garage, they have never come across the problem.
