DSG Remap in the NW

Hi All
I’m getting increasingly fed up with the DSG in my T6 Caravelle 199. It has the 7 speed DQ500 DSG and I think it’s got to be the worst gearbox I have ever had in a car. Pulling away is either very delayed or snatches and spins the wheels and reversing up a hill is bordering between dangerous and comical as the van goes between reving lots and shooting back or rolling forward! It’s just turned 18k miles so I don’t thing there is any wear on the box. I reset the adaption values which improved things marginally for a while but we are back to square 1 and my wife won’t now drive it as it’s so bloody awful to get the pulling away right! It’s still under warranty with VW as we bought it approved used but from research this seems like common behaviour for these gearboxes? We had a loaner 25 plate multivan with DSG for a while and that was night and day better!

Anyhow I am hoping that a remap like TVS would sort this but am not sure and if I did that first it would no doubt invalidate the remaining 9 months vw warranty we have on it.

Any recommendations from those that have corrected this? Will a TVS remap sort it or should I take it back to VW and tell them something must be wrong with it?

Finally any recommendations for who can complete a remap either remotely (if possible) or up I the North West/Cheshire area.

Cheers

My 22 plate DSG is absolutely brilliant. Can’t fault it in anyway. Like above I’d take it back and let them take it for a test drive then request a drive in a similar aged or newer DSG model.

Thanks all, sounds like it should’ve better than this then. I will get it booked back in with VW then👍. Cheers for the advice.

Just a thought, has it had or need DSG Oil service yet? Dirty Oil can cause issues.
It hasn’t ever had one yet. It’s a 2020 registered T6 (MY19) Velle but only done 18k (17k when I bought it). I think they are 40k service intervals? I drove it this morning and it wasn’t actually that bad, gear shifts are always smooth up and down there is no judder etc. If I let my foot off the brake on the flat then it starts to crawl instantly but there is a bit of a delay before it starts to accelerate when applying throttle meaning that you add a bit more meaning it then seems to shoot off, it’s a bit like it’s letting the clutch slip and then all a sudden lets it engage fully. That behaviour is most noticeable if pulling out on a roundabout in traffic etc where you need to get away swiftly or when pulling away on a hill it’s a bit of an art to balance the throttle right which is why I think the wife has fallen out with it. If I engage reverse it’s similar. I reversed on to my drive and it goes from a downhill on the road to an uphill on the drive, so reverse engages fine started moving pretty much instantly as it was down hill at first, at this point still no throttle, it got about a van length up the drive before there obviously isn’t enough friction in the clutches and it then rolls forward about a half van length until it was pretty much balancing out on a flat and would just sit there ticking over in reverse and going nowhere. Once I started to add throttle it picked up but it certainly isn’t a linear pick up and it needed very gentle throttle adjustments again to get it moving sensibly up the drive without suddenly engaging and shooting off. I could just be being over picky and DSG isn’t as smooth pulling away as a normal auto? Some threads from Pauly on here suggest he had similar on a Velle he had and it was very hard to park on an uphill in reverse. I’ve had the van back in already to VW a few times already as they didn’t do the right prep and handover work so they no doubt already think I’m a mythering wingey git so I want to make sure this is something not right with the DSG so they don’t just fob me off with ‘ it’s normal behaviour’ etc.

I’ve parked on some customers drives which are steep and never had a problem. Both uphill and downhill.
Don’t worry about taking it back as these vans are top of most people’s budgets!!

Yep £42k for a 5 year old van put it pretty near the top of my budget as well!

Agree, I think there must be something wrong with @andy500 van. Have you thoought about finding somone local with a DSG equipped van and asking them for their opinions?

Word of caution…don’t rush in to remap the DSG …from the start i had issues with turbo lag ( pulling away from junctions) so had the DSG mapped ..yes it felt great…but further on stated getting over boost issues…at this time I’d also learnt that Stop/start creates more problems than you think….
The Turbo suffered and regens became problematic …so at 52k ..map removed and new twin turbo ( new oil feed pipe and many other bits ) fitted….van is back to normal …Engine talks to gearbox so regens work as expected…I turn off stop/ start and put the box in to neutral in traffic queues
Don’t after a journey just turn off the engine …allow the engine to cool and turbo to spool down …change oils more frequently ( DSG’s like new oil )
If you are still wanting to remap do both the engine and Gearbox to match each other…..Remember lots of people want your money and don’t always give you good advice….i learnt the expensive way

DSG map would have had absolutely no impact on the boost issues you encountered later. We have done multiple T6.1s with the newer and due to the fact the Bosch ECU cannot be mapped yet have only done the DSG map with zero issues. DSG maps change things like shift speeds, clutch pressure and shift points etc.

Going back to the OP query it's not an uncommon complaint we've seen it can depend on which software is on the box and VW may update it but I know a lot of customers had similar complaints like @Matt-T68 and our map sorted it.

We're not a million miles from you. We're about 1.5 hours away maybe 2 depending on your location in Cheshire and can sort this for £349.

A word of caution a remap will invalidate the manufacturers warranty and all maps can be detected or proven by them simply plugin ODIS in and checking the map on the ECU Vs the map on the VW Servers and the computer will know if the match or not regardless what any company may claim. If you have 9 months left I'd stick it out. Complain let them check it and update if possible then at the end of 9 months get it mapped.

Ok @Dav-Tec thanks for your reply…..my symptoms manifested as 4 separate breakdowns that although VW had evidence from the AA of overboost issues they could not fix….so I had to try and replicate the fault….after buying an OBD reader found that when the soot level reached about 30g the engine and mapped gearbox did not respond correctly and would give a overboost code when trying to regen…
Resulting in premature turbo wear over time ……prior to a new turbo the map was removed on advice from TVS…on the drive back some 300 miles the regens had returned to normal
After having a new turbo (204) fitted by a very good garage in Derby…I was told no EGR or DPF issues just a bad turbo…as they said a mismatched engine/ gearbox didn’t help ….so general advice was don’t map one without the other….so I’m back to stock …happier and now informed how to run the vehicle……may be I was just unlucky…but strange things happen …some unexplainable ;)

Thanks @Dav-Tec i think that’s the best approach. I reset all the adaption values again and it’s a lot better again but still not consistently as I would like it. It’s a late T6 not a T6.1 but hopefully you could still help out. It really is like it just drops the clutch sometimes when pulling away. Resetting everything has made it a lot better but I expect it will end up back where it was eventually! I will get VW to check it out see if I can get an update like you say. And then if still not as good as I want it will be up to see you guys later this year👍

I do find the clutch is ‘sharper’ during a regen on my dsg.
That will actually be due to the fact that during regen it holds the revs higher. You'll notices instead of being at 850rpm they sit between 1000 and 1100rpm so during regen it will take off a bit keener. Again not the gearbox it's down to the engine
