Driveway Alarm Systems

As I'm picking up my new camper tomorrow, my mind has turned to additional security for my driveway.

I have a comprehensive intruder alert/alarm system for the house and for the driveway I have electric gates, multiple CCTV cameras and multiple security lights, but what I'm missing is perimeter monitoring that will alert me when anyone enters the driveway.

Can anyone recommend a such system? I'm specifically looking for a wireless system that will alert me via a mobile app, not one that sounds an audible alert every time the binmen, postie, window cleaner, etc. turn up.

How technically able are you? I do just this using my alarm sensors (outdoor mmWave motion), cctv (person detection) and Nest doorbell cam (same) all linked to home assistant. Get texts or even phone call on mobile for some things. Can give some tips if that’s something you’d want to tinker with

I could easily arrange for a wi-fi repeater. Any idea what the detection range is for these and can you adjust that range? (I don't really want alerts every time a cow walks past in the adjacent field )

The problem you will find is that one thing is not reliable enough on its own to trust it to wake you up in middle of night. That’s why I combine sensors and only get a text or call if more than one is tripped. The doorbell cameras have limited coverage and with mine it picks up people outside the drive zone occasionally. If you have gates you may have more luck relying on it alone.

What CCTV system do you have? Mine also does alerts on person detection and other smart alarms. You may just be able to do this from the camera or a replacement. Most hikvision ones now do it.

Not sure which system tbh - I'll look at the paperwork and get back to you - but I do know it doesn't do person detection.

I was wondering if a trip-wire type system around the perimeter would be a more reliable detection mechanism?

The new CCTV cameras have AI built so you can screen out unwanted alarms.

We have a tripwire system that you can switch off or on but its not wireless as such..I prefer hard wired...its works off directional pir beams so if the beam is broken it sets off an alarm within the house or wherever you have the receiver plugged into the socket. Im just in the process of upgrading our alarm system and getting this integrated onto the house alarm so its easier to control. Im not sure the trip wire systems are that advanced tbh, in terms of an app.

From previous experience, if someone wants your vehicle they will take it.
No matter what protection you have.
A friend of mine had a immobiliser which disabled his vehicle 1 Mile away, his vehicle was taken at 3am when he was asleep, so the thief’s came back to his house , got him out of bed at knife point and took him back to his vehicle to enter his immobiliser code…
They really don’t care!
He has cameras all around the house, but a simple scarf around the face can work around that.
Even if you have alarms etc… and the thief wants your vehicle are you going to say no when he has a knife or gun pointing at you or your partner ?
Nope, take what you want would be my answer.

@JonriceT6 Couldn't agree more...if a thief is determined then they are determined no matter what, but its good to have a some layers of security, visible or not, to deter the opportunist amateurs in this world and to at least feel like you've made some effort in protecting valuable property. Even if one of the layers deters amateurs then its job done but you are never going to know that of course. Its just a little bit of peace and mind when you go to sleep at night.

I agree mate, stronger punishments are needed for anyone who enters someone else’s home.
Far too much of it goes on without a slap on the wrist.

Hey @Ricardo T - thanks for the link. I'll take a read.

No police escort mate, but there were a couple of flashing lights during the journey... on my dashboard!!!!!! ('tyre pressure warning' and 'front assist not available'). After a quick read of the manual and a mooch around on here, I've convinced myself neither were too serious, though they did cast a shadow over the journey at the time.

Yeah, I get that, but not every scumbag will be as determined as you describe, so it does deter some... plus I'll have the peace of mind knowing I've done everything I could.
