Dealer retro fit reversing camera - possible to plumb into VW media unit?

Hi all,

Just waiting on a Kombi to be released by VW for delivery in a few weeks.

It has sat nav as part of the standard VW media unit but no rear camera.

The dealer has quoted me for replacing the rear view mirror with their retro fit kit but the price list also mentions a much cheaper fit to connect with the Kenwood multimedia unit. Camera only I guess.

The dealer is adamant it's necessary to change the rear view mirror and it can't be connected to the existing media unit.

I assume he is correct?

Thanks

No, your dealer is wrong !
They are trying to retro fit an aftermarket or T5/T5.1 camera to your vehicle, the kenwood affair is camera only and does not have the correct connector to go straight into the new MIB2 style headunits (hence why they are trying to change your mirror)
You can buy and retrofit a factory camera to your existing setup (I have done it to mine) but your dealer will probably be unable to do this for you as it requires a custom/modified piece of wiring that they probably wont have access too and would also probably be unable to program in once fitted.

We can supply the required parts kit to do this if you are interested for £280 delivered inc vat

Thanks for that and the subsequent phone conversation. I hadn't realised the retro fit camera was literally a retro 5.1 option. I'll cancel it.

Hi Barnstormer / Pauly. You wouldn't happen to have any details (ideally pictures) of the rear view mirror they were intending on fitting would you?
Contrary to the original post, I'm actually looking to install an aftermarket camera and rear view mirror with build in monitor as i quite like the idea of having separate screens for the parking sensor display and camera.

Hi Andy,

The retro fit camera is illustrated in the VW official accessories catalogue for the transporter.

Acccording to Pauly it's a kenwood camera and a kenwood rear view mirror. Standard T5 spare part.

As such I'd lose the auto dimming function of the mirror and apparently auto headlight control if fitted (latter not in mine) as the sense is in the front of the rear mirror.

So I've cancelled the retro, retro camera fit and will see if I can manage without. Having driven a Defender 110 for 11 years I expect I can...

Hi Pauly, do you need to have satnav for this to work or will it work with standard head unit that comes with highline?
