Spotted a lovely T5.1 Kombi dsg that I’m interested in buying, 2014
88k full vw sh but in all that time it’s never had the dsg gearbox oil changed?
Nothing at all on record 1 owner so always serviced at the same place.
It’s supposed to be done at 40k,
After reading on mr google I’m going off the idea as repairing can be mind blowing money
And honest advice would be appreciated.
Would it put YOU off????
Thanks in advance

Why don’t you ask the current owner why he didn’t get it done firstly, then say if he gets it checked by VW and gets the service done you would be interested?

I think that these are the best dsg boxes throughout the VAG world outside mega£ vehicles. Is it being sold by a dealership or private? Does it come with warrantee? Can the box be serviced before sale? If you are concerned move on. There are others.

Anyway there is better qualified advice than mine on here.

Also worth checking what engine the van has. There is a variant with a reputation.

At 88k miles the DSG should have had 2 oil changes, and as @mmi mentioned the BiTDI has a bad reputation unless it cane with revision D of the DPF and I think as a 5.1 it will be too early for that.

I did ask and he says vw never told him it needed doing that’s believable I suppose,
We’re pretty keen on the price but that’s definitely something to chat about with him ,
We’re pretty much down to brass tacks on price so I may be unlikely to get him to agree?.

Private sale so no warranty
It’s a 140 Kombi

I would still push back and say that without the DSG service he will find it difficult to sell the van to anyone who knows their stuff.

If the price is working for you ... you’re happy to run with a risk and do the oil change ASAP.....then go for it! If you are twitchy, move on! As @Kind of Blue says, there are others
Agree there are other vans out there or you could go with the van and look at a warranty that covers the DSG. Price minus the cost of the warranty?

It’s a 140ps
I don’t think the guy would take it into vw as he has replaced the van now with a Vito ,and just says if I don’t want it he will advertise it.,
Strange how vw Manchester have never told him apparently?
Considering it’s got full vw history and had the belt and waterpump done on time I’m definitely tempted, but with it not having a dsg oil change ever in it’s a bit concerning

Might be worthwhile contacting VW Manchester and asking for their thoughts. Maybe it has been done? No harm in asking.

Yep that’s exactly what I did they told me it’s had all the services at the right time but never the dsg oil,
Vw Manchester have looked after it from new,
The service guy said he would avoid it?
This is why I’m doubting it now.

Ah that statement from the VW tech says a lot.

The way I look at is this, if the DSG box fails can you afford a replacement if not can you get a warranty that will cover it if it fails.

Do you need the hassle, if not look for another van. It’s not what you want to hear but better safe than sorry and skint.

Sorry....VW who have looked after it say not to touch it?!!! Nuff said!
Yep
It’s not a vw techs advise it’s just the guy who works in the service department booking them in and dealing with customers ect BUT yep I’m leaning towards dodging it I think
Shame really
But as above
The thought of a dsg box going wrong on me is definitely a worry
Hence why I asked for the opinions of you good guys
Much respect
Thanks

Maybe he has his eye on it!!!

A it late on one change and I'd for it. 2 missed though is a different story and I would avoid.

Our daughter worked as a service advisor at a Toyota main dealers and even though she wasn't a qualified tech she picked up plenty of knowledge about what can go wrong and what should ring alarm bells. If the service advisor is saying avoid I would say that there must be a good reason.
