Burning bl00dy oil

So…we recently had full big service - all the belts etc. (also engine mounts and new radiator and other bits but that's irrelevant). It was all done by a recommended VAG specialist new me in Yeadon. That was just in November and today the oil light comes on!! The engine is the 2017 148bhp. Plan to stop at the garage in the morning (well the wife is) can anyone suggest questions to ask them or things ask to be checked?

You sure its burning oil ? Looked for leaks ? Have you checked the oil since it was serviced ?
Any signs of oil up the back of the van ?
Nope not sure - just jumped to the worst case! I’ve not checked it since the day after the service TBF. No signs of oil anywhere that I can see

A couple of things spring to mind.
I had an oil service on an A4 a good few years back and that showed an oil warning light a couple of days later. I topped it up, and that was the end of it. I put it down to a oil not getting to all the galleries and pipes until the car had run for a while. To be fair, the garage really should have monitored how much fresh oil they put in!

Memory fails me on what I was driving (MX5 perhaps) when the oil pressure light came on, investigation showed that the lubrication system was working fine and wasn't burning or losing oil - it was a sensor failure giving an erroneous reading.

I would check your oil levels daily and build knowledge from there.

Dip the oil and make sure its actually low for a start .
Top it up and watch it like a hawk if it is actually low, don't wait for the light to come on .
Everytime you move it after you've stopped just have a little look to see if theres any sign of oil drops / rainbows.
If its burning oil there'll be subtle hints of it all over the back of the van .

As above, it's more likely the garage didn't set the level correctly.

Reset it to no more than halfway between the MAX and MIN marks on the dipstick, and if you value your engine check the level weekly and before a long journey as the handbook advises. You'll soon know if it really is burning oil or if the garage were having a bad day.

Was that Moorfield Motors?
It was yeah. I actually stopped back there today and they had a look over and booked me back in for a second look next week. They spend a good 45 mins looking over it. Found some oil low down on what he called the sump cover but couldn't see a leak higher up - he's cleaned it up and recorded where the dip stick was so we will see in a week when I take it back

If its lost a litre plus for the light to come on then theyll be oil all over the bottom of the van too .
good point. The did say there was “a lot of oil” low down but didn’t mention the rest of the underneath

Ok so its leaking it not burning it thats better at least and now you know about it you can address it  .
Might just be as simple as something they've done wasn't tightened properly.

Yeah a leak feels much more fixable. They’ve probably sneakily tightened whatever it was while they “checked” underneath and gave it a clean!!!

Hopefully they've now double checked everything and cleaned the mess up.
At very least when you go back they'll be able to see if theres any fresh oil and where its coming from.
