Bit Of An Odd One... Dealer Asking For More Money

hi there

Bit of an odd one. Bought a used t6 from main dealer in August. Before buying I asked for app connect to be added - I knew there would be a cost for this - went in at the end of August collected van and made full payment for it. I get a phone call today (Jan 4th) to say they forgot to charge me for the app connect and now they want payment for that. What should I do? I thought the final invoice was the final invoice....

It's not really your fault they 'forgot'

The invoice normally has a breakdown of any extras added, with a cost against this. Is it not on your paperwork at all?

No it’s not on the invoice, but he demoed it working to me and I presumed it was included in the total balance outstanding!

Final Invoice should be the final invoice but not sure where you stand legally. If it was me, how I'd respond would depend on what sort of relationship I wanted with the dealer moving forward, i.e. if I didn't expect or need to be using the dealer again for any warranty/service work I'd tell them to get lost but, if I wanted to maintain goodwill and build a dealer relationship I'd start by trying to get them to meet me halfway with the omitted cost.

If it was me and they had genuinely forgotten to charge for the App Connect then I would pay it. I appreciate it has taken them a long time to realise the mistake but a deal is a deal. You could try for a bit of a discount for the hassle?

The deal has been concluded, if they made a mistake it's their own fault. You might have to find a new dealer to service it though

Hmmm. I'm sure my invoice stated everything that I added and it's cost, with the full price at the bottom plus the VAT. What about any other extras if you had any, are they on the invoice.

I kind of agree with @Davenjo. Refuse to pay them knowing they cannot really demand it, and they might be a nightmare to deal with in the future. So depends on who you are taking it back to for servicing and any warranty work.

They’re not local to me so wouldn’t necessarily need to be going there for service, but equally I don’t want to take the wotsit. Might try and suggest going half way, or doing a deal on a service...

I don't think you're taking the P by questioning this, depends on your moral stance on life. Personally I have a really good relationship with my dealer and my sales guy, and I wouldn't tell him to jog on in this situation simply because I actually like the guy and he's looked after me, so it would feel wrong to make him pay for a mistake.
I suspect many people would just tell them it's tough, and just ignore them, so asking them to compromise is not unreasonable, after all, I guess that's a pretty substantial bill you didn't really want this close after Christmas.

I actually had something work the other way a couple of months ago; I asked for roof rails on my new car and the invoice had 2 lines - one for the rails and the other for "ditch finishers" - hadn't got a clue what these were but accepted they were required. Turned out that the particular model I had purchased didn't need the "ditch finishers" for the roof rails - this was picked up by the dealer after I had paid the final invoice and taken delivery of the car - refunded me £220 - if they hadn't found it I never would.

I'd have to be honest, and pay up. Its not like they're ripping you off for something you didnt get.

I think you should pay.
I am sure you would want reimbursing if you where overcharged ?

I would tell them that this is a total surprise as you believed the invoice was for the package, especially since they demonstrated it to you on collection. As for warranty, they would be obliged to do any work there anyway. If you don't need them then I can't believe they could force you to pay. If it makes you feel better you could suggest that you pay half or less as a gesture of goodwill on your part. Having said that offering to contribute anything is accepting that you haven't payed in the first place. Missus Stigofthedub just said she wouldn't pay. You can get a free half hr consultation with a solicitor.

This is really interesting reading.... My half pennyworth would be, how much would you miss app connect if it wasn't there?
I would say, ok no probs, if I didn't pay come and remove the software, tell them a date, time and place where your van is going to be and that they have a 20min slot (as your time is money, and it was their error).
They probably can't be arsed to come out to you with a technician, even if you give them a couple of slots on different days, I'm sure they still won't be bothered.

Only do this if your willing to lose it if they call your bluff and turn up.

Let us all know what happens.

Have to say i’d tell em where they could go with that idea; i’ve paid the invoice, the deal was done, it is their fault not yours, and from an invoice perspective you believe they have already charged you for it. Really like @$immo approach though, would love to try that out. I’d also tell them that I would be charging them £20 for every 15 minutes late they were in turning up.
