Here’s a new one for me. Anybody ever been sold heat shrink tube that doesn't work? It looks right, feels right even smells right but all it does is burn…and it ain’t shrinking! :uh run:

Hang on, you're not heating it with a lighter are you?

As said, heat gun or a few close passes with the soldering iron.

That doesn‘t look like heat shrink at all, too thick, heat shrink lays flat at that diameter. More like protective sleeving (hose).

Both of those things occurred to me when I saw the pictures (and I'm a moron when it comes to that sort of stuff!)

As above, that doesn’t look like heat shrink, and a hot air gun is way better for this purpose.

also that crimp looks like it needs some more crimping?

give it a good whack with a hammer and cold chisel or large screwdriver to create a better crimp. (across the blue line)

then after to test it, put a screwdriver through the terminal hole and pull the cable hard . . . .

it its a good crimp you will not be able to pull the terminal off.

if you can pull the terminal off then you need to try harder - try again with a new terminal.

Thanks for the answers. Not my crimp Lee. Thats the one I cut off. I've got some hefty crimpers and my new terminal is a proper deep crimp. To the heat gun men, I agree it's a better way to do it but I don't own one and I've never had any problems with a lighter used sensibly. Anyway the flat tube advice is worth knowing and I've now ordered some more stuff, hopefully correct this time. Luckily no harm done but I wont throw it away I put it in my museum of bad buys.

I think even a hairdryer will do at a pinch if it’s held close enough and for long enough.

i have a couple of hot air heat guns . . .

the main one i use is Tacklife one, similar to this - heat adjustable. - https://amzn.to/3EHLfJv

and a flamless gas torch ( which is rubbish ) - https://amzn.to/3FOyiyT

but gotta say i always reach for the Mini Blowlamp / Flame touch (when making cables up in the garage)

it just seems easier / quicker to grab then digging out the heatgun and extension lead.

i have a few of them, - https://amzn.to/32UYARp

If im using the Gas Torch around the van to do heatshrink . . . . i use a plumbers mat so i dont burn everything.

This is the type of blowtorch I use but it’s a bit too ferocious for heat shrinking. Think I’ll stick with a good old throw away lighter. I do like the brazing mat idea though. I always get lazy with PPE so the bench, shed floor and my clothes are covered in little burnt holes.

I wouldn’t use a gas torch at all on auto size heat shrink. Hot air guns are cheap these days.
I have used a full on oxygen / acetylene cutting torch on Raychem heat shrink but that was 70mm diameter cable, no hot air gun big enough!
