Are EVs the way forward?

In my case I think it's better to hear both sides of an argument rather than simply join the "three word chant" brigade and think that change is simply something to get angry about.
Change is inevitable
It’s the way things are changing that’s the problem.
We will soon have zero control of our lives let alone how our government decides to run our country for us.

That works both ways, doesn’t it?

As we’re on the topic of EVs (linked to that are the environment, human health and associated costs) it’s fair to say most people accept there is an issue and we need to change. Myriad polling shows this. Most people want to do what’s seen as right too. But… not so many follow through. With EVs that is understandable as it’s a big cost and lots of people keep their vehicles quite a while.
Now let’s look at what’s happening- we are still driving ICE cars, nobody has forced us to stop, EV sales, reliability, choice and range etc are all being extended as time moves on.
Doesn’t seem a massive problem to me. I don’t own an EV and am in no rush to. My current vehicles have (hopefully) plenty of life in them at 11 years old… we’ll see.

But when there is a known problem and it is linked to huge public cost - healthcare costs linked to air pollution while clean up, infrastructure, insurance and food prices are all linked to climate change yet the public, despite saying they want some change, generally don’t make any change in habits then there has got to be some form of nudge. It would be remiss of any government not to do so. Their main job is protecting the inhabitants of the country and spending money on their behalf and they are voted in to do all this.

We could all easily lower vehicle emissions linked to us without changing our vehicle or how we use it. Just one simple example - why buy shampoo or shower gel or household cleaners in plastic bottles when said plastic requires oil to produce and transporting the stuff is high in emissions due to the weight of all the water in these product. Shampoo bars, soaps and concentrates (even in tablet form) exist for all these products, work as well and actually cost less due to how long they last, but people don’t like change so stick with what they always use.

It’s the publics desire for change yet inability to follow through that forces these nudge decisions. To some those decisions seem harsh, others don’t notice or care and some find them too weak and slow. Which probably means they’re about right!

I agree @Lubrown it’s already happening - seems like every couple of weeks a house on our street decides to get an EV.

Note - there are about 125 houses on our street.

Maybe try visiting or living in an authoritarian country to see just how much freedom we have.
Try ditching the TV licence or to see experience first hand how petty and authoritarian things have become.

If youre really up for it you could say something unkind on Twitbook about someone and see how long before the thought police visit.

Or try painting your front door a different colour in some areas and wait for petty officialdom to get their red pens out.

We have the illusion of freedom only, one of the most highly regulated societies in the world. The only differende is that for us non-compliance means an admin paperwork headache or fine and not being abducted and executed...although who knows what the future holds if we don't all get on board with electric cars?

Absolutely spot on!

Right first off when we were kids we thought that black high top Transit parked opposite was for soft whip ice cream rather than the yellow Gallones van with the chime, did wonder why we couldn't put Blue Peter on until it had carried on with it's round.
Thought police? Try mentioning politics, religion or what you really think of the swamper look and some Stasi officer will soon tell you what you can think or not on the forum let alone in real life.
There's 60 odd million, increasing by a thousand a day of us, depending on the weather, on this land mass and if we didn't march in lockstep there would be chaos, people doing just what they want has to be verboten/stamped out or you get people parking their Range Rover across two spaces or the walking dead riding scooters at you on the path.
Can someone please nudge the thread back on topic. :geek:

I’ve got an EV charger being installed on Monday, which will save me dangling the granny charger out of the kitchen window.

Also discovered that if the VW key loses the remote synchronisation, press unlock, the indicators flash like crazy, unlock the door with the physical key, key in ignition then resets the remote (VW 2021 eup! , don’t know if it works for others).

That’s all trivia though. Of course we have laws, rules, standards and regulations. Thankfully. Some you may well be glad we have, others you may hate - same for all of us in the UK I’m sure.

That doesn’t mean we have zero control of our lives or how the government runs the country though. We have fundamental freedoms many do not. If one doesn’t like how it’s run then vote for someone else, or even get involved and help change things - something many in the world simply don’t have the freedom to do. We also have the ability to learn, travel, work, love, get medical care, earn, watch TV, surf the net…..things we take for granted but many can’t do. Yes within boundaries, as thankfully we don’t live in anarchy.

Could things be better here, of course, but to say we have zero control is somewhat melodramatic. Especially when some in the world really do have no basic rights or freedoms. Although many will still be able to buy an ICE car in 2031…..barstewards!

I think you will find that I wrote we will soon have zero control of our lives.
I’ve based this on my own observations on lots of different things in my life.

I agree.

And I don’t get why people in the UK are so fixated on being able to use threats of violence and insult people based on appearance or religious beliefs.

Also I don’t see the Police sitting there reading social media posts all day long. They may react to calls where potential law breaking has happened but this, again, shows that it’s the public wanting to Police what is said, not the other way round.

We’ve seen that on this forum - accusations of name calling or of posting too many times when in reality all that has happened is you didn’t agree with someone and politely posted so. We’ve seen comments ‘moderated’ in an overzealous manner for the same reason. It’s these delicate folk that won’t have an open mindset and can’t be bothered to form a decent counter debate with accurate facts that hamper free speech… as a defence.

If I were to call Elon Musk (keeping on the EV theme) a rude word the only people jumping up and down would be the folk that like him and what he stands for - normally the same ones that say freedom of speech has gone!

Care to share?
We’ve been through this before on the threads it’s happened on.
And I presume the comments that were deleted are gone and therefore can’t be used as an example.
But then you’d know that.

Or is this more goading?

I think we are done here

I’m sure some will agree and some will disagree with threads being closed etc but I think we will stop here before it descends any further

I’m sorry to those that disagree or feel hard done by but honestly I just have better things to do than deal with this and respond to the reports this content generates.

I’m off back to Transporter related content !
