An interesting find but and explaination needed

Morning to the forum

So, after some recent work to my 70k mile 2019 T6, the follow build ups (see enclosed imaging) were found. Can any members point towards the reasoning behind these. The build up removed was thick, black and very sticky.

I would like to point out that I've owned this T6 from new and the engine maintenance from a mechanical point of view has been meticulous. Oil changes every 8k, only has decent fuel put through it. Oil sensors changed when require, renewed glow plugs, occasional engine flushes etc etc - Why? because I can.

Any help/view points will make interesting reading Im sureshot 8.webpshot 2.webpshot 7.webpshot 4.webpshot 5.webpshot 1.webpshot 6.webp

The letters…

EGR

Get it gone, it’s shortening the life of your engine

The job of the EGR valve and cooler is to reduce the exhaust gas temperature before recirculating it back into the cylinders.

Unfortunately this means that any oil carbon residue is likely to recondent site and get stuck there.

Having the EGR changed it's a common thing on the T6 but normally requires doing every 30 to 60,000 miles. (Depending on your driving style, ia City drives it will clog up faster, motorway drives it will last longer)

They can be removed in cleaned but once blocked you've got next to no chance of cleaning them.

It's a 600 lb part on £1,000 job...... Unfortunately part of the emission control system and a common thing for most modern diesel engines.

thanks so much for the detailed response. I'll get that job undertaken

More info, when I had mine done.

For the first time .....

thank you. Thats really helpful - Im getting it done!

On the van above I had the EGR Valve flushed through twice, which still failed the flow rate test.

So in the end Volkswagen replace the EGR valve and cooler assembly under the warranty. . That was at 60,000 miles.

...

On my second van, that's I bought at 65,000 miles with the assumed original EGR valve and cooler on it..... Has now started leaking coolant.

Again it's gone into Volkswagen under the all-in warranty package and they have diagnosed and internal coolant leak in the EGR valve and it is to be replaced..... I'm just waiting for a call back from them to confirm the booking date.... And this van is on 90,000 miles

Blank the bugger off! They destroy everything. Let your engine breath properly :)
Although I Will probably get lynched now but I have never had any problems at all in 15 years of doing this .

Hi everyone.
I Have t6 2017 highline 150ps
Panel van . First I got leak coolant in to oil , the lads from local garage found the leak in egr without permission they just remap the egr valve off and blanked it. And that's where problem starts. It start chocking at 1600 rpm, every time I fill tank to the neck it strat choking on 1000-1800 rpm I couldn't even move on the cross it would just cut off the engine. The lads in the garage had it for 15 days, they put new software, checked the injectors, after all diagnostic test didn't see any faults. They said van is perfect. But the problem remains the same, 2 weeks ago on the motorway my engine went 6000 rpm uncontrollable, clouds of wite smoke. I managed to cut off the engine, and got the van to garage.
Diesel got in to the oil . So they said. So they becomend to flush the dpf and change the oil.
They remove dpf, programed it off. Van is running, but no powe from 1000 to 1800rpm, and choking on 1800rpm. .
Garage said : nothing else we can do it is ok for van with 200k km. I'm desperate. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Change the egr to a new one is your first port off call . If coolant is leaking into the oil from the egr then blanking it off and remapping it won’t help ?

Tell them to reinstate the original software and remove the blanking. If that cures it then don't pay them, and takemit elsewhere for a new EGR.

In this case, aside from the coolant leak, it was otherwise driving well until they got their hands on it then it's clearly something they've done and you shouldn't be paying while they troubleshoot their own incompetence.

Im a bit unusual in these parts in that if something is broken I prefer to repair or replace it by the book. In my view no one should be driving a vehicle they cant afford to maintain properly.

I recently removed my EGR for inspection, I found it to be leaking a good amount coolant into the cylinders, the leak was between the EGR valve body and cooler.
Get the van out back to standard, then go elsewhere to have the latest revision of the EGR & cooler fitted.

This is the Cooler mating face, it’s of stainless steel construction.

This is the mating face of the EGR valve, as you can see, it’s soaking wet and very rusty.
