Aftermarket speakers and water ingress.

I have seen on here quite a few posts about getting water on the step with deeper aftermarket speakers. However I cant seem to find a definitive solution. Did anyone find one.

I now have this problem, however strangely it only seems to be passenger side.

Not only is the water in the step a worry, but also how long will the speakers last if they are constantly wet. :/

Thanks for any help in solving this.

yes . . .

@Absolut5 gave me this advise. ( top man !! )

get another sheet of that sound deadening stuff . .

stick it of the back of the door carrier (inside the door void)

so it creates a "rain shield" and diverts any rain droplets back into the middle of the door void.

that will drip to the bottom of the inner door skin, then exit via the drain hols at the bottom of the door.

just use one full sheet, only peel off the backing at the top where it sticks to the door, that way it wont stick to the back of the speaker.

we are just looking to make a rain canopy for the speaker driver,

rough sketch bellow.

this is option 2..

stick the sheet on the front of the door . . .

and push it into the speaker hole.

then mount the speaker ring and speaker over the top...

again creating a rain shield for the speaker,

to divert any water drops away from the speaker.

Rainwater coming off the bottom of the window and dropping onto the speaker basket at a guess, I've used a plastic sandwich bag in the past over the top half of a door mid speaker magnet and basket to form a cape, you'll quite often get rust on the back of a door speaker.

Thanks for the replies.

@Dellmassive I thought of the first myself, however the surface on the back of the door card is not flat to stick the sound deadening to. However I will have a go at the second method which should be ok. My concern with this was that the sticky side of the sound deadening with stick to the window, but @Absolut5 says it should be ok.

Thats tomorrow mornings job sorted then.

Thanks everyone, especially the 2 already mentioned. It really is appreciated and what makes this forum the best I have ever used.

I meant the cause of the water ingress, I suppose

Water gets past the window scraper rubber in every vehicle Andy. Always has. That's why cars have a sealed window carrier panel, or in the old days a sheet of plastic, and drain holes in the bottom of the door.

I have seen some rubber hoods that cover the top of speaker backs. Perhaps that's what you need John?

What they said.

Rain and car washing water will seep down the window side rails and past the window Rubber into the wet side of the door.

This can drip onto aftermarket deeper speaker and chanel the water onto the dry side of the door. Causing wet speakers and a puddle on the step.

So the rain Shield deflects the water drops back to the wet side.

Dont peel off all the backing paper.... just the 20% thats stuck to the door.?

Leave the rest of the sheet covered.?

I've just changed my speakers so i'll have to keep my eye out for this..........anyone aware if the water collars be bought in 8"?

Sandwich bags come in an 8" size, just tear one side open so the speaker doesn't look like it's huffing glue from a crisp packet.

Any idea where you saw them?

I peeled all the paper off, and the stuck some adhesive aluminium tape (I use it to line the belly pan of my track bikes belly pan to reflect heat of the exhaust) to the back so it should add strength and eliminate the sticky problem.

Not the neatest job, but its hidden and hopefully will work:

Whats this bit?

we want the lower half of the speaker open.. . . . . or is that just the outer skin of the door?

I'm guessing side impact bar wrapped in sound deadener, there looks to be room for the speaker basket especially if it's a 165mm rather than 200mm driver.

Anyone had this issue resolved by VW at all? Basically with them taking the blame and knowing the cause?
I feel I might struggle with VW seeing as quite a lot of people are having this problem since upgrading their audio...
