Aftermarket headlight issues.

I fitted a set of aftermarket headlights a while back and not done much driving in the dark.I think there may be an issue with them as they just don’t throw much light out at all.

  • Dlrs on all the time.
  • Turn on side lights and no addition light comes on.
  • Turn on dipped light and a dull light comes on (Pic 1)
  • High beam seams to work ok. (Pic 2)
When doing a bit of investigating I notice some loose wires, possible corrosion?

The lights are these.

I’d love to hear thoughts on this.

Cheers

That wiring does look pretty knackered. Unfortunately a lot of aftermarket lights have pretty shocking wiring quality.

Side lights as you call them (position or parking lights) are meant to work alone. What were you expecting ?

Those are the V1 lights, not the V3s in your link.

What should happen is,

OFF - DRLs
AUTO - DRLs or dipped beam depending light and if you have auto lights.
"SIDE" - DRLs dim a bit
DIPPED - As above with dipped beam
MAIN - As above with main beam

Note, it needs coding for dipped beam to stay on with main beam as the twin light system is designed to be used.

The poor light output is down to the bulbs. It looks like you have halogen bulbs which are rubbish in projector lights. LEDs or HIDs work much better.

As for the wiring, none of it looks like it was originally part of the headlights. The added relay may suggest it was someone's attempt at getting dipped to stay on with main beam.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking there was something wrong with the coding as no additional lights came on with the DLRs when I turned the dial one notch.

Noted on the brightness, I’ll get some replacements ordered and fitted ASAP. They actually seem worse than the originals!!

You could buy these (from THQ from memory) with an additional harness that illuminated dipped and main at the same time without the need for coding. It looks like issues you have are from this additional harness. Find someone with VCDS local to you who can code the vehicle for dipped to stay on with mains and ditch the extra harness.

I ran THQ Mk1 lights (as they're known on here) with normal bulbs and they were fine.

IMO the THQ aftermarket headlight wiring is pretty appalling. I’ve had my V2s at least 3 years and operating without problems but I re-worked the wiring and made splash guards for the exposed electronic modules.
Some silicone grease packed around the connector seals will help longevity.
