Ad Blue - final help please

So... its in the VW Centre and they have identified that the ECM software needs updating, also the rear EGR pipe has a split in it, this seems to be a common fault at 70,000 miles which is exactly right for mine. They suggest replacing the EGR pipe, conduct software update and hope that sorts the problem.

Question - they want £750 to conduct this, I'm wondering if it is easy to replace the EGR pipe myself and just pay for the software update - anyone know how easy the EGR is to replace, I looked on youtube and seems a bit fiddly but not a massive job?

Those rear pipes usually fail a lot earlier than 70000 miles and the new one is a different design- they really should change it under a goodwill agreement as it’s a known fault hence the design change. Mine was done under an extended warranty. I’m also amazed but not surprised VW charge for software updates- these are usually to fix issues which shouldn’t exist in the first place. At 70000 miles you’re probably going to need a new EGR unit soon,1k at a good independent. I’d get the software update then spend the extra getting a new EGR unit but not at a VW dealer. I’d also look for some kind of guarantee that the software update fixes the initial adblue issue

I’m not sure - the VW garage just confirmed mine was suitable for upgraded software. For anyone interested, I actually managed to fix the problem without needing VW. Once I replaced the EGR pipe (£49 EBay), I used a cheap code reader to clear the faults on the EMS. I took off the AdBlue injection nozzle and checked it was nice and clean… I then drained Adblue tank, put some more Wynns fluid in and added 10l of adblue. Took it for a drive and after about 5 miles the yellow EMS awning light went off and AdBlue systems says 6000mile until next refill.

Looks like it was the split EGR that was causing the sensors to pick up an issue and put the adblue warning on.

So anyone with similar issue I would first have a look at EGR pipe and see if there is soot on it, replace that first. It was an easy fix, took about 30 mins on the driveway, you just need small ratchet and some splined tools.

Interesting.. my addblues started playing up, and I had the EGR pipes replaced in November last year. This would have been done within this refill cycle of the add blue.

I’m going to take a look and see if there’s any problems.

I’m really getting to the end of my tether with this van.
