80k miles / looking to buy / cambelt?

Seen a kombi '21 plate with 80k miles on it. I asked as part of the haggling with the dealer whether new cambelt could be fitted due to the milage/age.

He said its 133k miles when it needs doing. Is this more or less the guidance now?

Will the dealer underwrite the cost of a new engine if the old belt fails?

It’s the official VW service interval, normal.

I’m old school and would be changing the belt at that milage personally! Small change for peace of mind

About £1000 of small change🤔
I’m currently running a 2001 A4 into the ground, 16 years since the last timing belt kit renewal, looks fine.

A grand indeed, mebbe a bit less if one shops about. Definitely small change compared to the cost of a new engine, and inexpensive when one considers the peace of mind it brings.

Folks are driving the wrong vehicle if they can't stomach the bills that go with a T6/6.1. No one enjoys getting their wallet out, but it costs what it costs.

It is, of course, the OP's call. Personally I'd walk and find another if the dealer wasnt willing to belt it up anew - the cost to them will be negligible. Its a buyers market, no shortage of vans to choose from so I wouldn't even waste my breath arguing with them.

It's funny thinking back. I knew several people that were changing them every year on CVH Escorts.

Yeah, it's a shame as its a nice LWB which seem rare (for my budget anyhow) but he won't budge a penny off the price and not changing the cambelt as a gesture either. Whatever happened to the old days of haggling!

£500 for belt and pump at an independent garage.

The timing belt interval depends on who you ask. I've seen about 3 different "official" intervals.

Unless you are sick of looking, I'd walk away unless he at least offers something towards the belt being done.

Yeah good shout. I am sick of looking but i need to learn to be more patient and i'm not in a hurry really. Annoyingly the seller owns his own independent garage so it would cost him v little (compared to the van price) and its been for sale since December.

Sounds like you are dealing with a numpty unfortunately 🤣🤣🤣

Its already cost them over 3 months of depreciation, and kept money tied up on the forecourt. Money that ain't circulating ain't earning.

I got mine changed for £500 at an indy (i did supply the coolant), including the auxiliary belt for nowt, off the factors as they messed up the order, delaying the job. Slightly off topic, but it was a Gates kit, which now has a different / improved water pump. Apparently the originals could play up and jam in the non circulating position, and cause the engine to overheat. The new design, fails in the circulating position, should it do so.

For the sake of £500 odd I don't want to walk away as such, but a token gesture from the dealer holds a lot of value to me. I get they need to make profit but it doesn't seem like a big ask to me.

Also makes you wonder why it's not sold in 4-5months. That's bad business having it sat there.

I was negotiating on a brand new unregistered electric car , ( doesn't matter which )
The dealer was whinging and whining about a set of car mats , I KID you not !!!
I got so pi££ed off i walked from the deal .
A set of car mats ffs and he eventually buckled , but by then it was far TOO late to possibly do a deal .

His loss
