204ps TSI

Just have a look into these vans having g recently discovered their existence from another post, I'd be very interested to hear from other owners on here and how they are to live with, I would probably look to tune it up to the 300bhp, can anyone recommend a reputable tuner ? And any pitfalls with doing so?

I looked at these.

Pt1
My impression is that you need to rev it to get it to go. I am of an age where I don’t need that so the low pulling torque of diesel suited me better.

Pt2
Finding one in the spec you want that you don’t have to take at a mortgage for was impossible. There are reported to be only 270 registered in the uk. No idea if true or not.

Pt3
The petrol simplicity for my low annual mileage was attractive, but if you know what your van is telling you the short journeys is not an issue for diesel.

Good luck in your hunt, Pendle and Revo are a couple of tuners that would take it to 300bhp.

So I got one of the last few made - ordered 3 days before they took them off sale. I went for it primarily as I'd had a few diesel vehicles that had DPF issues probably caused from lots of short journeys and those were a part of life. I'm glad I did too as it always felt like diesel was not the way to go despite the marketing saying otherwise with regard to emissions and the environment and it's proved to be the right move from that regard. I love it don't find you need to overly rev it as huw mentions however I've never had a diesel transporter to compare it too though. For me it's powerful enough at 204ps - it is a van and not a car. I've had high-powered vehicles and ride motorbikes but jumping in the van its a different ride and don't crave more oomph - it's got plenty if you want to hammer it. Lowered and stiffened suspension with anti roll bars feels more important to being able to push the van rather than just brute force. I've had loads of comments of 'your van's quiet' as most are diesel and pertol purrs rather than growls. Mines been converted from new to a camper which will of course give it a different flavour of ride compared to a kombi. Hope this helps

few more than 270 but not many - i think from this about 350

Get one, you wont look back. I've got one with a Pendle map and TVS DSG remap and I love it. There's not another Transporter in the world I'd swap it for. If I'd have bought a diesel instead I would have chopped it in by now but I'm keeping this forever!!

Also got one. Converted to a day van/camper with no kitchen from new. It eventually ended up with VB Air and an LPG conversion as well. The Pendle map hasn’t gone so well with some hesitation noticeable at some points in the rev range, but I love the power!
Its so smooth and quiet to drive (with DSG) and I love it.
These engines are supposed to be pretty robust, but mine is going in to have a coolant leak checked out next week. Hopefully nothing too serious, as it seems to be dripping onto the floor from somewhere.

I’ve got the 150 manual - same engine with a lesser tune. Had it for 5 years now from new. Very smooth and quiet, does like to drink fuel though. I get low 20s around town and very low 30s on a long run driving like an old man. Had water pump replaced under warranty a few years back, other than that no issues.

I have a LWB TSI with Revo stage 1 and TVS map. Prior to the revo map it had a custom map at 290+ bhp (without the TVS). The combination of the remap and then TVS makes the van an absolute rocket and it’s so driveable in all gears now. Mine is a DSG and has the sport mode which was dropped from the 6.1 DSG. I also have a steering wheel upgrade with paddles if I want to drive it in “manual”.

I’ve considered taking it further numerous times with new turbos and intercoolers etc, but for the money of the revo and TVS (~£800 at BMVS if you catch them in a Black Friday sale) you just can’t imagine how much fun it is. I don’t think any 4motion RHD variants were made so putting even more power through the front wheels is what makes me hesitate. Someone on here was selling one recently though and I think it was 400bhp+ and they thought it was well worth it. That was serious money and upgrades though.

Edit: I only run it on shell vpower and when “spirited” driving is called for I get ~19mpg. The beauty of the revo map is you can get an OBD plugin that allows you to switch between maps including the standard 204 as well. But on a long drive back from Wales at 60mph I was getting mid to high 30s mpg. I didn’t buy it for fuel economy though. It’s just too much fun.

Figures around mid 20s to high 30s on a run as above are fine by me co soldering I average 35mpg in my 1.6 focus estate, so won't be too much worse, and for all the additional benefits seems worth it to me for the smiles, now to make it happen.......

This one was built by Simply Surf bus at the same time mine was built. It’s had further work by the look of it to make it more of a camper with the pop top. They were featured in VWt June 2021 issue…

What symptoms did your water pump give when it failed? I’m thinking my leak may be from the pump as it seems to be coming from somewhere above the front engine mount.

It'll be the thermostat housing / water pump that's leaking, its a bit of an achilles heal of the 2.0 TSi engine.
