12v garage lighting

I have so many fluorescent bulbs in my garage the drain is over 500W.
As it’s been such a cold winter I’m thinking of adding a diesel heater with a 12v transformer to keep the chill off. Then I thought what about changing my lights over the 12v LED too.
Anyone else tried this?

Loads here - go solar !

As @Pete C check the link above.

We just fitted 12v LED strings along the joists.. about 12 strings.... then run that from the 12v PSU or battery bank.

Switched via the normal light switch...

I'll post a few pics...

just went out and took these pics . . .

inside we have these . . . ( i had these in the back on the T5.1 PV and worked great as a work lights)

i then added these in here as a temp solution off battery power till we had a 240v supply run in . . . while we was building the garage.

theres the square type too . . .

when we finaly run in the 240v i just fitted a 12v Boxed power supply and left the LED lights as they were . .

after that we added solar on the roof and fitted an inverter, primarlity on solor + battery . . . with 240v when needed or as a backup. (but you can see that on the other thread)

moving outside, we used these waterproof LED sticky strips . . . more warm white in colour for ambient (love island style) garden lighting.

its all been running a couple of years now and works great . . . free electric / lighting (well almost)

have a look at the bits:

LED chains :

Not 12V but I put a couple of these in my workshop, it’s like working in the open air on a sunny day.
we got 4x of those 100W versions out the front keeping any eye on the van . . . its like Blackpool illuminations at night, but acts as a security deterrent.

240v fed via a PIR sensor across the front . . .

whole house is LED bulbs now. . . . except one halogen bulb in kitchen !!! (with out that the dimmer flickers and pulses when OFF, the one halogen gives enough current leakage to stop that symptom)

Great post! Lots of food for thought there.

You can get LED strip lights that fit in pretty much the same footprint as the old fluorescent type. 3/4/5 feet etc versions. Amazingly bright. Fitted them in my basement /mancave recently and wish I'd changed them earlier

Got links?

I’ve had the square Audew LED lights in my garage for quite a while now. 20 of them in total. I just wired in a 240VAC to 12VDC converter to the existing light wiring which supplies all the LEDs. Works very well, and I keep meaning to add them under my car port as well.

I've recently replaced some of my fluorescent tubes with LED batten lights in the garage (and outside)
If you buy 3 or more the price comes down by 15%.
I have one outside above the garage door (they are IP65 rated for outdoor use) operated by the roller shutter controller and two just inside the door. Very bright, instant light, so good I'm thinking of changing the other 3 5ft tubes inside the garage but may only need the single version as there is so much light in there already.
I have seen a youtube video of the Vtac battens overheating...

That is bloody awesome, now trying to get approval for spending from the economic buyer.
Did you need planning permission to add solar to garage roof?
