White T5 ‘blows Up’ On M4 Yesterday

Driving down to Cornwall on the M4 and was following a white combi. I think it was a T5 but before I got a good look at it the back end erupted in white smoke/steam. Surprisingly the driver didn’t notice for 30 secs and presumably the engine gave no indication of a problem. I pulled alongside and hooted and the driver then headed over to the hard shoulder. I couldn’t believe how much smoke/steam it produced and it seemed to be coming out of the vehicle but must have been the exhaust and the aerodynamics made it look as if it was coming out of the body of the van. When I looked in the rear view mirror the whole of the three lanes were in a white out. Hopefully everyone was ok but I suspect the van is very poorly!

Classic head/head gasket failure....?

Water jacket breached and water injested into engine causing white steam smoke out exhaust....normally followed by rapid engine overheating.

But if there is no water in cooling system then engine coolant sensor won't show the overheating. (Unless the ECT is located in the engine Block.... most are on the rad or thermostat housing)

Seen that before also from a failed water cooled charge cooler... same outcome. Water ingested into the intake

Either way it's gona cost the poor guy.
