Which OBD scanner should I get

Good afternoon everyone, been a member a little while and after many hours happily digesting umpteen hugely informative posts I at last have a newbie question, and hoping forum members can offer some advice ..

The Intoduction part .. mine is a 2017 California, CXEB, BMT, 58K miles, all OEM, uses no oil or coolant and on the whole goes pretty well. But (isn’t there always one) for the past 5K its been running with a P046C fault (EGR circuit A sensor range) and thankfully there’s been no engine management light to go with it. So, nothing then to get too alarmed about … hummm, lets hope. I thought the omens might be good when I had a nosey in the EGR whilst replacing the front pipe, which I decided had to be split and wasn’t, and found the pipe and cooler bone dry with surprisingly little muck.

Out of curiosity I’m now thinking I really should find out if the EGR valve is opening and closing properly and if the code might actually indicate something that requires fixing instead of being just a blip as I’ve read can be the case. Once again several posts on the forum provide a trove of information and graphs to show what the valve does when its working and when its not. Plenty to go off.

The Question part ... okay, so, I sold the Topdon Artidiag that identified the fault because the screen was too small, real time monitoring was crap and it wouldn’t export data. Thus, I’m looking for something better to replace it with that will do the job.

So far I’ve considered three - VCDS, Carista dongle+Car Scanner App, and Carista dongle+Carista App. My head tells me VCDS and just suck up the learner curve because even though I’m unlikely to use many of the features it’s widely used and understood, but at the same time my pocket says if there’s an IOS app thats easier and does almost the same then why shell out the extra. Not sure Carista App justifies the hefty subscription tho.

What recommendations from their experience do forum members have for a reasonably intuitive diagnostic app / tablet that aside from doing all the other things enables a comparative OBD novice to delve into the operation of the EGR and reveal whether it is opening and closing properly and export the data so I can put it on a screen big enough to see.

Sorry if this droned on too much.

Budget?
Just want to read and reset a few codes - Carista is good and constantly developing and improving.
Are you going to repair the defect yourself?
If not the repair establishment will have the diagnostic gear and do it anyway.

Thank you for replying @DXX

Within my abilities I'd likely do the repair myself. On the whole unless there's no alternative I try to avoid garages.

From my perspective if I've a nagging suspicion something might not be working as it should I'd like to be able to find out for sure and fix it at my convenience before whatever it is actually bites, so the tool I seek is ideally one fairly user-friendly with functionality to monitor whats going on under the hood and download the dataset for plotting.

Budget reasonably elastic. The ability to find out what is or may soon turn into a fault, or that nothing is faulty has a value higher than the immediate outlay.

VCDS I sense is ultimately the best and although Ross Tech customer support seems superb, at the end of the day probably more experience than I have is needed to use it safely. Maybe in future, but right now perhaps a step too far.

Some super posts on the forum by @n10n & @mmi amongst others from 2022/23 using Torque and Car Scanner with custom PIDs. If the dark art of PIDs can be mastered and I find time this might eventually be the way to go.

Meanwhile, as you suggested, Carista seems a good entry point and it seems to support out of the box at least some of what I'm hoping for. Even Carista admit certain measurements in terms of EGR operations require using different Apps though. Most work with the Carista dongle, which is helpful.

Thoughts welcome.

Mobile mechanic was round my Daughters the other day nending her 5.1. We had a good chat and he showed my his iCarsoft V4.0 ghat hes recently acquired to trial.

Very impressed. It cant do stuff like the display customisation that Carista can, but as a tool for diagnosis, repair and configuration of new components/modules its closer to OBD11 than Carista. Itll also reset the battery counters on the telematics, which Carista can't. It also does live data, as you'd expect.

Unlike Carista theres no subscription, updates are free for life, and you can add two other "makes" to the unit FOC. The plan is when my Carista subscription expires im going to get one, add Volvo and BMW to it, then thats my van, our cars and my daughters car all covered on a single device.

VCDS is undoubtedly the most versatile, but I have the IT skills of a witch doctor, and a laptop won't fit in the glovebox when on me holibobs.

Torque Pro only Android) is ideal for reference data collection - before anything goes wrong. BUT, to make everything work a proper diagnostics tool and a CANbus-sniffer are needed (to collect the actual CANbus messages), additionally need to figure out how to scale raw data (CANbus messages) into more familiar format.

Within my abilities I'd likely do the repair myself. On the whole unless there's no alternative I try to avoid garages.
Leaves only VCDS as an option?

None of the others can do e.g.
* [T6_measured] 01-Engine - Built-in test for EGR
* EGR Valve Self Test Procedure (IDE00242)- P046C?
* 204 DSG intermittent momentary power loss

Search results for query: "[T6_measured]"

ICarsoft V4.0 can cycle an EGR and test the response.
Are you sure - I mean to log live data while a test is run, as shown in the examples? Many tools certainly can launch the test and receive the response = which only means that test was run. Unfortunately the response doesn't convey any data if the actual test result was a pass/fail. The pass/fail criteria must be determined by user, unfortunately.
ICarsoft V4.0
Besides the other tools, I have also iCarsoft CR MAX which should have the same capabilities as V4.0. I'm fairly confident there is no such a capability to record data while running a test, would be a pleasant surprise if there was one.

My old V2.0 used to BITD, although it was clunky and crude.

I hope to lay my hands on a V4.0 soon and ill give you all the low down. TBH i'm very disappointed with standard Carista.

Reviews on Youtube for iCarsoft 4 look promising, and Google AI appears to confirm it can monitor/report livedata for EGR actual/requested performance and apparently actuate the valve - extracts below. Question is do you believe AI .. feels as if Google might be mixing its sources when compiling the answer. Me thinks more research required. Got singed by Topdon after doing reseach and deciding an Artidiag did what I wanted and found that actually it didn't so nowadays very wary of any claims until verified - hence why asking the forum.

iCarsoft 4.0 EGR functionality (from Albionshire Diagnostics) ... it does appear quite comprehensive. Unfortunately it also appears Log files can't be exported, although I seem to remember a Youtube demo implying they could. Still its £200 or thereabouts which bar the shouting puts it nose to nose with VCDS 3-Vin version, and Ross-Tech customer support is good whereas from Trustpilot reviews iCarsoft customer support could perhaps improve.

From the function list of VAWS V4.0, it can perform the EGR and the detailed functions as below:
1. Low Pressure EGR Valve Adaptation
2. Low-Pressure EGR Differential Pressure Sensor Adaptation
3. Manual Test Of Low Pressure Egr Valve
4. Automatic Check Of Low Pressure EGR Filter
5. Exh. Gas Recirc. (EGR) Correction
6. Adaptation Of Exh. Gas Recirc. Valve Bank 2
7. Test Of Low Pressure EGR Valve
8. Manual Test Of Low Pressure EGR Filter
9. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Alignment
10. Emission Reduction (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
11. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
12. Testing Dynamic Start Of Injection
13. 003 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
14. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve (G212/N18) Adaptation
15. Reset Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Low Pressure Valve (N345)
16. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Low Pressure Valve Function Test/Adaptation
17. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Low Pressure Valve (N345) Adaptation

I asked:
1. Can it actuate a sweep of the valve through its opening positions? Answer - please select Manual Test Of Low Pressure Egr Valve
2. Can it log requested values/ actual values? Answer - please select the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
3. Can the data log be saved and exported e.g. CSV format? Answer - LOG data can not save as CSV file.

Thinking its Carista Pro for in the van while on jaunts and mull over which is the better to spend my hard-earned on for the workshop.

Credit to Albionshire for getting back to me in 24 hours.

Thank you to the forum for your help.

Its Albionshire im looking to buy from.

I too would prefer VCDS, but I've not got much in the way of pooter skills so want the best possible alternative that fits in a glovebox and which doesnt have recurring subscriptions. That I can also load Volvo and BMW functionality onto the same device for free means I can cover my entire home fleet and my daughters cars in one black box for sensible money, and im not limited to a fixed number of VINs.

Fully get why it would meet your needs. What makes me slightly cautious is the size of the screen. If log data can't be exported, 5" isn't much when trying for example to see what the EGR valve is really doing.
