What is the yellow wire for please?

Apologies for asking.. but what's this yellow wire for please?

This is a reverse camera connection (the instructions aren't clear enough).

Is it an earth?

The yellow wire is usually a trigger wire to tell the display to show the image and is normally wired to the reverse light wiring.

so if it was permanent live with ignition on one could have permanent rear image or use another switch to watch what was going on when one choses.?

That would work. I had a rental truck and it had the reversing camera wired like that, so it was like a rear view mirror
