The way the diff-lock engagement/disengagement is mechanized is actually very traditional - no computers involved.
When engaging it's just the button press which triggers a relay (the button is illuminated by the relay output), which then activates a vacuum solenoid which then (via the vacuum) operates the actuator at the diff-lock to engage the lock. The ABS gets information of the button press to know that driver has activated the lock - and turns on flashing light on the dash.
The confirmation of the locked status (steady light on dash) comes from three "sensors" at the control element of the diff-lock itself. The ABS reads the status of the sensors to know when the diff-lock is actually engaged. When disengaging the same but in opposite direction. Thus the ABS has no way of controlling whether the diff-lock engages or not - it's only monitoring the status via the sensors.
Any dash warning lights? Any logged fault codes?
What do you mean "no ABS" - the anti-locking feature was not working at all,?
What other things specifically?
Any parts were replaced?
Do you get the button light? Do you get a steady/flashing/no light - on dash?
When the systems started failing there was warning lights I do not remember what or the text. I was travelling up hill off road at the time and was just trying to keep going with momentum and front wheels scrabbling away as I bounced over smooth rocks on the way up. Just thinking its a long awkward reverse down the hill with overhanging woodland just great for tearing side mirrors off. The Haldex was not engaging the rear at all. I managed to get home the track was dry. I am fortunate in having 2 ways in though, One across fields with trackway at either all up hill from the property. Down hill was the way I had come up through woodland on an an old rocky trackway resembling interesting green lanes that snake around this part of wales. In poor conditions it is easier going down of naturally. Trees or branches occasionally fall across the way especially in the windy autumn and winter months. So occasionally on the way down one has to reverse up hill a distance. A bit of a pain when making an appointment or just trying to get somewhere for a particular time. i try to limit going out the top way in poor weather. Wet grass makes for difficult traction and tram lines caused by frequent passages can get quite deep. The latter is a long story. I only own part of the way up hill and non down hill and have had many a battle with adjacent land owners in either direction for one reason or other.
Anti lock braking was not working I could easily lock them up on the road when I next went out to the VAG specialist. He diagnosed a wheel sensor. My wife and I drove off to do some shopping a short time latter received a call all done. Collected the vehicle from a very busy garage and went home. All was working fine.
A few months latter rear diff lock stopped working. The light on the switch had stopped months earlier but the repeater in the instrument binical always lit up and it did operate. The vehicle was fine off road with it this way. Contrary to what I believe I have read on these pages somewhere. More recently the diff-lock has not been working no light on switch as before but now no light in the binical and it is most definitely not working. The vehicle wheels slip slightly off road before the engaging 4Motion does its stuff. The vehicle does not feel so tight as before as I often engaged the diff-lock to keep it free and now obviously it was not pre engaging the 4Motion so instead of all being ready and not slipping at all there was little slips and hesitation before it regained composure.
Oh, one other thing! The Anti slip regulation switch has stopped lighting up but it does in the instrument binical.
The slightly annoying thing is, I have found a very good Independent VAG Specialst. he is very popular so very, very busy. He will see someone very quickly in an emergency or something very important but usually has a waiting list. When the vehicle is with him, I am always surprised by just how fast he fixes things and then calls. I live approximately 20 miles away. We usually drive down in 2 vehicles and return. Expecting either a late call or a "have to keep the vehicle in" but that never happens. Its get in the house put on the kettle, answer the telephone "all done pick it up when your ready" down phone return, pick up vehicle and so on. I always felt I was receiving special treatment which I was embarrassed about but he just said he likes to be busy and while he is waiting on a part for one vehicle he works on another and so on. Yet I have never known someone so diligent fast and attentive to the task. So he is good, very good and has a good reputation in the town and beyond.
Except for one last thing that is. When I last took said vehicle in for some works service and so on, I took it in the day before because I wanted the diff-lock sorting and wanted to give him good time, he starts work very early and has always has said if I get anything in early he will give it a look at no matter what. However on this one and only occasion he did everything else but not the diff-lock. I was just a little frustrated but you know he has always be so more than perfect so I explained that the off road performance is especially important to us, he did not allow me to finish as he might normally do , he is very polite and quiet. On his occasion he was polite but I received a little lecture on the suitability of said vehicle for my intended us. I ought to get a Landrover and so on. I was a little gobsmacked. I can on assume he thought that we were just riding around for jolies and had not interpreted what I had just said or at least not the way I had intended. He did say I could book it back in if I wanted!
I went home and stewed!!! was I being unreasonable, why has the situation changed? So on and so on. In the mean time I have found a company that will fit Down Hill Assist. They even contacted VW so will do it but at a cost which is unfortunately a lot more expensive than another company who has done several on the 6.1 and see no problem doing it on the T6 but said it might need slightly different programming but don't see it as a problem a couple of hours work they thought. So I would like to try to negotiate with the first company to drop their price a bit but I am poor at that sort of thing, the wife is far more direct.
Sorry I have no electronic port reader and can not give out a coding report and only take on what the independent VAG specialist tells me and he is far too busy for a chat believe me. I can not remember what lights and what the text said exactly its a little while ago and i rarely remember that sort of thing for long. I am very grateful for the explanation of how the diff-lock engages and so on. It sounds just like a Landrover sort of thing.
Perhaps I ought to buy a gismo for reading fault codes and so on. If it worked in plain English and was obvious to an ignoramus then perhaps I could do the occasion thing perhaps even save some money and do my own Down Hill Decent Assist but if it needed knowledge of binary code figuring or hexagonal coding then I am probably a little to old to start. Checking and unchecking boxes might be OK.
Any way thank you for you expert considerations and explanations.
