Thanks to the advice from various forum members including @Dellmassive and @roadtripper, over winter we updated our failing lead acid leisure batttery to a Fogstar LiFeP04 105ah battery with a Victron charger. Our original Yuasa battery only lasted 2.5 years despite not going below 50% soc.

This weekend is the first time we’ve got away in the van and I thought I’d share our experience.

We’ve got a typical campervan setup with a fridge, lighting, usb chargers and a diesel heater (which we used for an hour or so each night and once in the morning) and a 100w solar panel

Having looked at the Fogstar app we used 43% capacity over 2 days. We obviously didn’t need the EHU charger. As much as anything having an app to tell you how much remaining capacity is a game changer. It makes it so easy, as is the peace of mind knowing you can go for days without having to worry about running out of charge, and damaging the battery.

By the time we had driven the 80 miles home it was fully recharged.

If anyone is thinking about upgrading to a lithium leisure battery, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

Glad you're loving your new lifepo4 to experience.

As for solar,

May I suggest that you upgrade your solar controller to a victron 75/15.

It has an app with full data logging.

To will be able to see what power you are getting from the sun, and how much you get over the day week. Etc.

It's an easy install. Just swap your existing for this one.

Two wires from the panel,

And two wires to the battery. Fused at the battery.

Thanks, I think that is a really good upgrade and definitely worth considering.

Thanks for the update @NicolasH it's always good to know how things turned out

I'm not too surprised at 2.5 years for your Yuasa. Even well looked after leisure batteries work much harder than starter batteries.

Hi,
I am looking to swap out my leisure battery, possibly a dumb question but is the LiFe04 a direct replacement to a old lead battery.
I have smart charger and hook up, do I need to add any more components for a swap.
Just wanting the best battery when we go away for 3-4 days.
Thank you.

Best upgrade I have done on our caampervan. LiFe04 (180amps) never run of of power and not been on EHU for nearly 2 years..............

It can be a straight swap, so long as:

All your chargers (solar, DC-DC, 240v) have lithium charging profiles.
You have a low temperature charging cut off, either built into the battery and/or as a setting on your chargers.

Obviously the sizes of LiFePO4 batteries, and the terminal connections will be different so you might need to alter your wiring slightly.

I’ve just fitted a 160Ah LiFePo4 battery but had to do some alterations as my mains charger (PMS3) didn’t have a lithium profile.

Battery connections also needed changing but I was rewiring anyway.

Roamer recommend a particular type of fuse for battery protection (Class T or MRBF). I’ve not changed mine yet, I still have a 60amp midi fuse connected to the battery.

Yeah that was the other thing I meant to add, if you don't have a main fuse on/near to the positive terminal, it's a good idea to add one with the battery. LiFePO4 can discharge A LOT of amps if there's a short circuit in the system!!!

Hi,
Just checked my mains and it’s a victron ip22. Believe this will be fine with a lithium battery.

Thats what I fitted after I dissed the PMS3. You’ll need to set the profile in accordance with the battery manufacturer. I fitted a Roamer battery & their knowledge base tells you everything you need to know for Victron & other chargers. Their support is excellent as well.

If you’ve got a DC/DC charger you’ll need to change the profile on that as well.

PS there are discount codes somewhere on here - which I didn’t notice until after the event!!

Cheers. Is it easy enough to change the profile? I am clueless when it comes to this stuff as you can tell :slow rofl:

Yeah it was with the Roamer battery as there was a step by step guide with images for the Victron chargers in their knowledge base. Plus if you’re stuck they’ll talk you through it. Can’t speak for other manufacturers but sure they’ll be similar.

The other thing I’d recommend if you don’t have one already is fit a battery isolator. Mine didn’t before I rewired - which was no surprise as the converter didn’t even fit fuses!

I fitted a LiFePo4 battery when I got our van, I haven't been on EHU since. We don't normally stay in one place for too long and even if we do we often still use the van to visit places. With the current set-up I think we could stay somewhere for 4 days without moving. I'd originally planned on installing solar, but so far I don't think we need it. Totally worth the money
