Tyre load rating question, new information. (Any MOT testers on here?)

I've just been on the telephone to Camskill looking to buy some new tyres.

I was asking about Michelin Primacy 5 and the CrossClimate 3 Sport. Both of which have a 102 load rating in 245/45R19 - the size I was looking at.

The Camskill guy on the phone told me that neither of those were load rated as on the sticker on my door jam the weight ratings listed are 103 or 104.

I suggested a 102 would be ok for my van as its a T30 and that equates to a 101 or above. He said this does not matter, that it would fail its MOT, my insurance would be invalid and the Police could prosecute at any time.

Plus he also said I would get about 4k miles maximum for either of those tyres.

So I was wondering if there are any MOT testers on here that could confirm this?

Load rating - Classes 5 and 7 only

A tyre load rating table is in Appendix B.

Make sure the tyre load rating is suitable for the axle weight.

You can find the permitted maximum laden weight of an axle on the manufacturer’s plate.

If axle weights are not displayed on the manufacturer’s plate, you must assume that the load capacity of the tyres are suitable, unless there’s indisputable evidence to suggest otherwise.

If a goods vehicle has a ‘Ministry’ plate showing lower axle weights not to be exceeded in Great Britain, you must use those instead of the ones on the manufacturer’s plate.

So it’s whatever it says on your loading plate on the van divided by 2. That’s what the MOT tester will read.

I’ve got C rated Goodyears and without C rated tyres I think my van would spend a lot of time in the tyre fitters. A heavy vehicle, stiff suspension and crap road surfaces need van tyres.

My last set of tyres were not C rated and I got over 30k from them. I'm not sure I believe him saying get less than 4k.

If he is right about the load rating thing then I bet well over 50% of the people in here are running under the rating.

No, most people are running the right tyre loading, because the 20” alloys they’ve bought are running cheap 275 tyres that are basically solid rubber…

I’m running Nankang AS2+ at 103 rating (T30)
Great tyre, done nearly 3k miles in them and they still look new.

That’s my rating sticker, which doesn’t list a 20” wheel… so how could the MOT tester go off that?

My quote above was direct from the MOT manual online, so as long as you satisfy that, then you’re legal. So I’d agree that 102 are acceptable.

I've got a T32 so couldn't verify. However, is it possible that all vans, regardless of load carrying capacity, have the same sticker?

The LOAD / weight plate is under the bonnet - it states the max axle weights.

that sticker is just a guide for tyre pressures.
As I understand it though that sticker with the tyre pressures matches a table in the handbook and shows the only wheel and tyre sizes ‘approved’ (presumably meaning tested by VW) for that vehicle.

Other size wheels might fit but haven’t been tested.

MOT wise, if it's a class 4 (which t30 is) then we don't care about load ratings. Only class 5 and 7 I believe. But I only test class 4.

Have look and see what your chassis plate lists as the axle weights. A 102 rated tyre must be very close to the rear axle weight on a t30, so might be safer popping up to a 103. It's absolutely chucking it down ou4tsid, so I ain't going out to look at mine!

Thanks @Dundee_Kev , wouldnt expect you to go out in the rain lol.

I just checked mine. There are 4 lines under the chassis number:
3000kg
5300kg
1- 1600kg
2- 1625kg

Im going to say 1625 / 2 = 812.5kg

101 is 825kg
102 is 850kg

So if I buy 102 tyres I am comfortably under the load rating of the tyres and therefor totally legal?

I noticed that too, so evidently there are differences!! Even if they may all quote the higher load ratings.

@JoshB_ is yours a Sportline or maybe just a 17" chassis?

My T32 is a 16" chassis, maybe that has some bearing on the sizes listed?..

From the moment he said that you can treat him as the buffoon that he is.
Let me guess, he can't supply the tyres you want and could legally use, but he's got something in stock that would be perfect?
