Team Ascot Grey

Hi
am i correct, you're lowered 70mm 20" wheels et45, 275/40/20 tires. Do you have any rubbing? im looking at a similar set up. Been told they would rub?
No rub at all on the backs, very slight rub on the fronts on full lock. I’m told it can be sorted with a heat gun to manipulate the plastic on the inner arch, but it doesn’t really bother me - very rarely do i ever use full lock, and it’s so minor you hardly notice

Thanks for reply. Do you know the et of your wheels? and what size tyres you running? i have 275/40/20 on et40, they ever so slightly rub on full lock too, doesn't bother me either, however current van is only dropped 30mm, new is 70mm

Tyres are 265/40/20 and wheels are ET45

Not sure I would put 20s on because of the effect on the transmission. Well worth re-gearing if you do.
What do you mean, 20s and transmission? I’ve ran 20s on my t5 for around 6 years. No issue…..probably tempted fate now

If you Google it you will find lots of different opinions. I don’t pretend to be an expert but the garage that I use (who have specialised I Transporters for a long time now) don’t recommend 20s and indeed won’t fit them. Also from what I understand although VW will fit 20s on Sportlines one of the reasons that they are so expensive is because they have to do extra work on the transmission.

Please explain why.

Logic says...

Increased wheel diameter + reduced tyre profile = the same tyre circumference (within a small tolerance) = minimal impact on gearing

...but I'm happy to be corrected.

Pretty sure Sportlines come with 18s? Another minefield to cross now, nice one

I think this particular minefield arises from the misinformation provided above. There are significant numbers on this forum who have real-life experience running with 20s long-term and I would 100% listen to their input over someone citing Google "chatter" as their source.

Some people do change back from 20s to 17s/18s, usually for comfort or fuel economy reasons, but I haven't read about anyone having gearing issues unless they've been running oversized tyres. My advice would be to ask this forum; start a new thread on that specific topic if you can't find an exiting one. You won't get total consensus, but you will get the considered opinion of the T6 hive-mind.

I’ve got 20s on my t5( manual), ran them for 6ish years. No issue. Previous comment and new van being a dsg, got me thinking. My thoughts are similar, bigger wheel, smaller tyre, creates something not to dissimilar from standard wheel, maybe the weight of the new wheel could effect? Is the van going to be used for heavy loads? Could this put strain, I doubt it would be significant to do damage? I don’t know? More research to sypher through. I did ask vw sales guy, bigger wheels/ warranty. He said you should be ok…not a definitive answer by any means.

Haha - you'll never get a straight answer from a dealer regarding what might compromise the warranty. They'll be under strict instruction to leave VW maximum "wriggle-room" when it comes to interpreting liability for claims.

EDIT: Yeah, I guess an increase in un-sprung mass might increase transmission load - best consult the T6 hive-mind :)

This is how she looks at the moment, switched the banded amarok's for a set of interaction alloys, did keep the general grabbers.
The banded amarok's will need some inspection, there is a persistant 'judder' since day one, and i'm fed up with balancing and re-balancing them over and over again.

Hi. Just collected our Cali Beach Camper in Ascot Grey From Breeze in Poole. I’ve fitted Black Rhino Yorks (17s) and Michelin Agilis Cross Climates 215/60 R17 (as i do a lot of distance in the wet and the grip on BFGs worried me). Everything else is standard for now.

Future thoughts. Black wheel arches and decals along the bottom. Trying to fit my front runner rack from my old amarok as well as a solar panel to the roof. Remapping from 150.
