Hi all, quick one. Should I pursue reclassifying van as camper van? Does this make a difference. I have had a little peruse in here and I’m more confused then when started, thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If your van doesn't have a high-top roof, you've not got a snowball in hell's chance of getting it reclassified. Besides which, there's little to no advantage of reclassifying.

If its registered as a motorcaravan the "benefits" if you can call them that ,,,,
70mph on motorway ,
70mph on dual carriageway
MUCH cheaper ferry prices compared to a commercial vehicle, which I'm guessing a van with windows , however it may look inside is classified as.

I could be wrong , and don't really care if I am.
Please correct as necessary

Exactly as the esteemed Bav advises above. Unless it was registered from new that way by a manufacturer or an IVA approved converter the DVLA won't accept anything other than a high top. You've more chance of politician passing up a freebie than you have of getting ot re-registered without a high top.

If the van meets the definition of a motorcaravan, as defined by the Type Approval Regulations 1979 reg.2, then...
(1) Car speeds apply on all road types.
(2) Why would you choose the commercial vehicle option for the ferry?

@Chris1983, this thread is the succinct, collective knowledge of the forum on the subject of reclassification...

Personally I wouldn't choose the commercial option, as mine is a motorcaravan.
However when booking p+o from hull , over the years , I'm sure there is veiled threats on the booking system about booking "vans" instead of motorcaravans , the price is nearly double for a van.

Fair enough, but it's the law that determines what is or isn't a motorcaravan, not the contents of the V5 or a ferry company.

I booked the ferry as a car before because I’ve seen some SUVs on the road that are the same size as my T6 SWB.
