Takata Airbag Recall

Hi folks,

I was watching a pretty hard hitting documentary about the Takata Airbag scandal and when it mentioned this was a worldwide issue and not just confined to the US, of course I did a quick google.

Sure enough there’s a VWUK page dedicated to the recall of UK vehicles (both commercial and passenger) and when I put in the VIN of my 2011 T5.1 Caravelle Exec it said

“This vehicle must be checked by the Volkswagen Van Centre.

As an owner or holder of this vehicle, please contact a Volkswagen Van Centre as soon as possible.”

So I called my local and they’ve booked it in for a recall repair under warranty at their next available slot.
The lady on the phone then said “oh, it’s actually due two recalls… oh no, it’s ok, one’s been done”.
But, when she gave me the recall code “23DV” that mine is now booked in under, a quick google seems to suggest that’s to do with EGR coolers and ECU software, nowt to do with airbags…?

Can anyone shed any light on the 23DV code, and has anyone had theirs in for the Takata airbag recall?

Cheers.

23DV is a software upgrade for the EGR valve. From what I’ve found it can have a negative effect on fuel consumption

Yeah that’s exactly what I thought. Very odd. I’ll have to ring them again today to make sure that’s *not* what they do!

I just looked at this page, and see my 2012 is effected.
I will give them a call to sort this out, thanks op for highlighting it.

My van is mapped, I certainly hope they won't mess with it.

Thanks @F34415 for reminding me about this.
Luckily I am not affected.

Hi do you have the web link to the recall page please

Have any of you eligible for the recall had the airbag replaced? The recall site said my t5 california was affected but my local vw dealer said they would not replace the airbag because vw uk were not authorising any such repairs (this despite their recall site saying the airbag can cause fatal injury!).

I registered my van with VW two weeks ago. they took my details but havn`t heard anything since.
I hear Citroen are telling owners not to drive there cars.

Contacted my local VW Van Centre & I am booked in for the beginning of August and advised that they will check the airbags and then decide if they need replacing or not. They have also agreed to a free wash and valet inside, which is a bonus (although I am sure they will use it to try to sell me something).

Update, van went in to VW today, turns out my airbags were ok and did not require a change.

Whilst having a chat they advised that they don't do many and the ones they have done are for the ID Buzz which is the most affected VW van apparently.

On the plus side they have done a health check and there are a few minor things I need to fix (some I knew about already, like the exhaust), but all ok and they are giving it bath inside and out in time for me to collect later :D

As an aside they did advise that I need to top up the power steering fluid as it is low. However, I haven't come across any leaks, so where has it gone?

The airbag mainly. If its been flagged up on the recall database, why are they saying its not needed ?
Did you check the power fluid levels before you gave it to them ?

Totally agree, and I have pondered that one myself, but its been checked and I have no reason to believe that they will let me go away with a defective airbag.

Makes you wonder if they actually know what airbags are in which vehicle.

No I didn't, but on collection they claim to have topped it up (I have checked it and all is ok). Perhaps this is a cheap ploy to say they have fixed an imaginary minor issue FOC and make me more likely to use them in the future I don't know.

I don't tend to use main dealer facilities unless I have to, much prefer independents as they tend not to be wedded to their laptops and are more likely to fix an issue rather than just throw parts at it if you know what I mean.

The van was clean when i got it back so that was a plus.

I had the same discussion.
They booked me in for the van to go there for Airbag replacement, but before I attended they called and said that it doesn't need checking and that it will be okay.

I tried to understand why it was on the recall and I was dismissed that all vehicles in this period showed this recall.

I don't feel particularly satisfied that it was dealt with properly.
