Tailgate lock actuator

My 2018 T6 rear tailgate suddenly unlatched and wouldn't open from outside or inside. So here's what I did as temp and then permanent fix.
Temp fix - on inside just above the latch in centre of tailgate is a rubber grommet. Remove to expose latch mechanism. You will see the latch bar. Pull this up to open the door. Close door, drive home. The actuator may unlatch it again randomly, so you may need to repeat.
Permanent fix - remove tailgate trim (see you tube!) I confirmed that this was an actuator problem because central locking nor both door opening switches initiated the lock actuator.
New actuator bought for £25ish on eBay part description and number 'Boot Lid Tailgate Locking Actuator Solenoid Motor VW Passat Touareg 3B5827061C'.
Unplug the switches,
Slide the plastic cap holding the latch bar from the actuator
Remove the three screws holding the whole rear door handle mechanism (with actuator bolted to it) and slide whole mechanism out.
Reason for this is because the actuator retaining screws are on the back!
Unscrew the two actuator retaining screws and replace with new.
Plug in handle and check it works.
At this point I also popped out the rear door handle. Has two retaining lugs at each end, simply push in with a small screwdriver and handle Will pop off.
For me this exposed a little rust to the edge of handle hole where handle seal was poor. So a bit of rust neutraliser and touch up paint sorted this, I hope. One to watch anyway. This is all hidden by door handle so didn't need to be perfect.
Then reverse removal and a full check of all operations before replacing trim.
Note it kept randomly delatching again, so checked the codes (obd11) and cleared the central locking rear tailgate lock intermittent fault (code 00329). This stopped the random delatching.
Job done, has been behaving since done.
Hope this helps
Other possible fault is external door switch, so make sure it isn't that before buying the part. But replacing it is same procedure as above.

I seem to be having the same issue. Both external and internal switches won’t open the door and there’s no noise or movement when I unlock/lock the van with the key fob. Is there a fuse relevant to this at all? Thats the only other thing I was pondering.

Same issue here ,
most frustrating
adjust ,try closing a few times ...all working fine ,wait a few minutes with door locked or and inside the with engine on and doors all locked ....only 5 minutes into a journey bleep it opens .....

aaarhhhh

My tailgate lock has been behaving oddly for some time until it peaked the other day by fully opening as I was on the slip road just about to go on the motorway!!

Found this thread and fixed it for £25.

It eventually stopped opening altogether but luckily I could get in the back to manually open it. Mine also did some odd things after fitting but doing the Carista reset and also the thing where you open the tailgate and switch the engine on, it now seems to be behaving itself, the boot button on the key fob now seems to work as well which I'm not sure it ever did before so thanks for that Redut, saved me a fortune.

I’ve had the same issue and partially fixed it by following the advice but as you’ll see from attached picture, my wiring into the actuator is damaged and I think the 2 pins in the little blue plug are dodgy. Does anyone know if you can replace the pins in the plug or if I can get a new plug?

What's it still doing after your fix?

I have actually found that mine is now basically fine but sometimes when I lock the van the tailgate doesn't lock but does if I press the fob again, apart from that is seems good. However, I've decided while I have the trim panel off to replace the handle/microswitch as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Every now and again it just doesn’t open. Because of this I’ve not fitted the door trim and I have a zip tie connected to a long piece string that I use if I can’t open it. Once it open I give the little blue plug a wriggle and try to ensure the 2 wires are secure into the plug. I also replaced the black mechanism that locks the door. Pretty sure it’s a plug I need so hoping someone on the forum can advise if after market plugs and wire crimp ends are available.

As an update I have now also replaced the handle/ micro switch and it has totally cured any remaining weirdness. Definitely worth doing while you have it all in bits. Got the switch from a VW direct seller on eBay based in Lithuania, arrived within a week and is genuine VW part, cheaper than any UK sellers.

@Dundrummin is this the part for the micro switch'? 7E0927235 approx £65

and am I right in thinking my existing white door handle outer trim just attaches to this once fitted?

When I opened my tailgate this week a load of water poured out of the back of the handle bracket onto my head! (i'm mid conversion and don't have any ply panels currently fitted) and now I am having issues opening the door from the outside handle. it will occasionally work but only if I find the sweet spot after pressing all around the inner rubber :-(

Once you get the whole actuator out attached to the handle and refitted the new actuator did you put sealant around the door handle when you reinstalled it or can you get a new seal to go on there. Looking to change my actuator so have not removed it yet. The door has the usual water leak coming through where the actuator is. Reason I am asking about the sealing is I don't want to spend £70 on a new one for that to be fubarred within a few weeks again.

I had the same concern, my actuator was fine but my replacement handle comes with a new seal on it so I fitted that and things have been fine since, no signs of a leak 6 weeks later. Will keep an eye out for leaks but looks good for the minute

I didn't use sealant, cleaned around the paintwork which was flaking so treated and painted, then re-seated handle. Don't see why not to use sealant, but perhaps sparingly in case it needs to come off again at some point.
