Summer 2026 trip - Santander to Cherbourg

Like I said, I have no problem with the hole in the floor loos, a bit of bombing practice an all that. I was just used to either those or a toilet with a seat. Toilets are intended to have seats, I’m not overly sure why but they are and so the lack of one just gives a vandalised public convenience vibe imo. We went through Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland last year and only came across a loo with no seat at the stop in France on the way back, otherwise everywhere had the full standard loo, seat and bog roll combo. Let’s see if she is willing to accept these third world conditions for a few nights as I’d like to stay on the site as it looks great!

I missed the opportunity to include the only bog we didn't test last summer...

We normally stop just the other side of the border in Urrugne.

@cgtmiles. Apologies but I've got to make one more contribution on the subject - this is from a campsite that where we stayed in Aosta, Italy a couple of years ago. You never know, 'er indoors might find it useful. That's it, subject closed!

Thanks but we booked a stop already near there, Hendaye, literally on the border.

Looking for a Spanish stop prior to that, might look west from Santander, haven’t considered that yet (needs to be within driving distance of the hendaye stop though)

Dunno if I've already mentioned this, but if you're straying into the Pyrenees, The Col de Pourtalet and Canfranc Station are must sees. You can cross the mountains by either route. Pourtalet is spectacular in good weather and biblical in bad weather

Technically we were some way from there staying at Lourdes but by struggling to get onboard the funicular railway car we managed to get an excellent viewpoint from the cafe and bar at the top of an adjacent pimple...

There is a site in santander but turned up on spec to find it doesn't take dogs so we didnt stay .

Already worried about my daughter joining us as is says in the T&Cs that you need to book another pitch for another tent and we are hoping to use the canopy and 2 man tent instead of the awning with sleeping annexe. Theoretically should be better as this setup has a much smaller footprint but technically not allowed
