Stop Motion Animation

Does anyone creat Stop Motion videos by any chance? If so, do you also happen to do Lego Stop Motion?

Looking for some advice on camera and lens setups specifically for this.

Cheers.

Wow. That was quick!

My son is currently using Stopmotionstudio Pro but thinking of getting Dragonframe and having a Canon camera and RF lens from us as a kind of Christmas present come college / uni tool.

Looking at options and waiting on Black Friday prices.

What lens do you find most useful? What camera do you use too?

Do you do it as a job or just for fun or both?

Current potential is the Canon RP or possibly the R8 and then getting the Stop Motion Firmware add on.

Have looked on Google and YouTube but it’s a minefield.

He is currently using a Panasonic GH5 lined from college with a 25mm lens I believe.

I use a Sony A7IV with a 24-70GMII and load the pictures into FinalCut Pro and do all the necessary work there.
You don't need stop motion software. All you need is a tripod, reliable lights (and a dark room) and a remote control.

But you don't need a 4K Camera setup. Every camera with a manual mode will do the job. All Kit lenses are good enough when you take pictures below f8 and the bit depth of a raw picture is "better" than your movie anyway.

That’s really useful, thank you. He just said he’s actually used the camera settings to do the Stop Motion capture and imported into Premiere Pro to edit.

So is this type of lens an ideal one to pick up?

I thinks there’s a bundle with the Canon RP with an 24-105mm F4-F7.1 lens and another bundle on the Canon R8 with an 85mm Macro and also a 24-50mm lens.

Which of these bundles sounds most useful?

Do you have any examples of your work at all?

Nothing very insightful to add, but you reminded me of a lock -down project where I couldn't get out on the road less travelled. Thought I'd recreate one of my videos in stop motion stylee. Just used my Sony system camera taking individual frames and then stitched together in a video editor...oh and some paper, scissors and feltips and plenty of lock-down time for the 'action'.
No sage like advice, other than give it a go with what you around you to start off with! You're bound to do better than me!

Why do you need a full frame camera? Is he aware of the costs that follow?
Makes no sense to buy an expensive body and a "cheap" lens like the 24-105.
Get a good lens with a constant aperture and spend not more than 1/3 of the budget for the body.
Tripod costs quite a bit, fast SD's are still expensive, lights are not for free, the new MacBook, the 10 SSD's :think smile bounce:
I would go with a second hand Canon Eos DSLR. Nobody wants the cameras and the lenses (EF) anymore. A pro camera with a pro lens is available now for under £600 (Like a 5DMKII and 24-105f4).
If video ever becomes a topic he would "need" something more modern.

We have been looking at loads of stuff tbh. I am aware that this will add up in fairness, but the guidance is very welcome.

He’s got a MacBook M3 Pro 16” already but would need the rest of the kit.

I have also been offered an EOS 750D with an 18-55mm and a 50mm lens for about £300 too.

I am trying to get somewhere on the middle ground area and was planning to maybe get Dragonframe for him to get used to before uni, but sounds unnecessary by the sounds of things?

That's a great camera to start with.
He will find out soon what is missing (if any).

I´m not sure about the price.
The lens is good enough for the needs, the 5% increase in sharpness is not worth the extra spend.

If he knows in a few months which angle he prefers he can buy a prime lens for that. 18-55 and 55mm is what most people start with.
