Steering judder on starting up

Hi all, I have noticed that when I am manoeuvring off the drive in the morning the steering judders whether i turn left or right out of the drive. This morning I re-parked it which involved a three point turn and it was juddering with each turn of the wheel. I then drove into my local village a couple minutes away and parked there which involved some more low speed manoeuvring and no issue. It only seems to happen when the engine is completely cold. Grateful for any ideas of what it may be. It’s a 2016 T6 150 DSG. Thanks all
 
Probably the steering still pumping up, next time let it run for 20-30 seconds and/or give it a few revs before manoeuvring and should hopefully be fine
 
Mine does exactly the same (2016 140 manual). Normally, in other vehicles, a few revs would sort it but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Fine once warm though.
 
I had this problem on a T5 years ago, it eventually got worse. My memory is a little fuzzy but I'm sure it turned out to be the alternator pulley causing it.
 
Mine does exactly the same - those extra few seconds warm up makes all the difference.
 
Question, may sound odd but how do people get the cap off? Mines feels bloody welded on and with it being plastic I’m worried to apply to much pressure and breaking it
Just turn it anti clockwise fella it’s a bit stiff but should turn.

This hydraulic fluid expands as its temperature increases.
The mark on the dip stick(integrated with the cap) is not typical min/max
but instead it indicates minimum level for both (cold and hot) hydraulic fluid.
To fix this "judder on starting up" problem just simply top up you fluid.
Even if you have no visible spillage or leak on your system do top up!

I had it in the past and it was driving me crazy. Even if the level seems okay top up!

Hey Robert, I’ve got this problem on my t6 2016 140bhp manual and I’ve topped up so it’s now showing mid level at cold, hasn’t made any difference at all though and still got this judder.. had top mounts replaced to.. god knows what it could be?! Rack or Pump maybe?

Top up to the brim.

thanks for the reply! when you say to the brim, do you mean to the brim of the when Hot mark indicated on the dip stick?

Bring your fluid level to absolute possible maximum. Ignore dipstick completely.

Yes it does expands a little bit but your problem is not enough fluid at low temperature and your pump sucking in air and then making judder effect.

Unfortunately not but since I’ve changed my tyres it’s definitely less noticeable, I really only notice it whilst I’m doing really slow manoeuvring. I’ve had it checked by various vw specialists and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s just something they do
 
I’ve always put the vibration down to fluctuating hydraulic pressure due to cold fluid. The power steering pump is fixed displacement so has a pressure relief valve, the colder more viscous fluid will have a greater resistance to flow through the ports. Throttling through the PRV will soon raise the fluid temperature.
I run the fluid levels to the manufacturers marks and have never topped up.

I’ve just done this a few days ago. It certainly helped, but it’s not completely alleviated. Disappears as soon as the engine is up to temp.
