Steel caps not fitting….

Recently I got myself some winter tyres fitted to a set of steel wheels (best decision I’ve made in a long time with the weather so crap up north) however my alloy wheel bolts didn’t sit properly so I ended up buying std wheels bolts from tps. In addition to the steelies, I bought the plastic centre caps that I thought just slotted on, however it’s as if the wheel bolts are too small or the clips that go around the bolt heads are too wide….

what am I missing?

I bought the caps second hand but they look brand new, from someone who had sold on their transporter but I spotted they had a crafter on the drive so assumed they weren’t from that (otherwise he’d have kept them)

Hi morning pal the wheel bolts should be 19mm standard. Can you take one off and pm me a picture of the wheel bolt.

What I,ll do is send you a picture of mine when I get back home tonight. And see if they’re the same . They should be if you got them from TPS . But I,ll take a picture anyway and send it to you.

Hi @Celticrsmith & @Radford1071s,

I’m having the same issue with fitment, using genuine 19mm head wheel bolts for steel wheels on banded 17 inch steel wheels, did you have a picture of the correct wheel bolt, so that I can compare..??

Thanks in advance

The stock wheel bolts that came with our steels had a groove in (pressumably to retain the caps).
When i replaced with factory alloys they came with new bolts without the groove in them .

Those are not the correct bolts.
The OEM bolts are like the one that @Radford1071s had on the photo. Those grooves do not hold the OEM caps on.

Well they did on ours and were supplied from factory in 2010 ;)
The ones supplied for our alloy wheels were the same as Radford posted .
Maybe the later stuff changed ?

I’ve got the same bolts as @Radford1071s, when locating the centre cap over the bolts, it has quite a lot of twist free play, so with or without the groove, I see no difference in reducing this, it’s as though the bolts should be 21mm or that they require a cap on the top of each of the bolt heads for the main centre cap to click onto.IMG_6272.png

I just can’t see how the groove can make the difference, the caps have too much twist free play, so unless either the head of the bolt is larger or the collar is larger, the lip on the underside of the cap isn’t going to find the groove. Has anyone actually got caps fitted currently that they could look behind and check bolts..??
