My very first broadband connection was the same....

500kbps or 0.5mbps.

I had the bt squid ADSL modem.... Loved it.

A massive speed bump from the 56kbps modem, or high-speed 128kbps ISDN link s we used at work.... Lol.

Ah.. the good old days..

Those were the days - we had BT 56 Kbps at home and it could take anything up to an hour to download a single [illegal] MP3 track from Napster. You couldn't use the phone at the same time either.
I'll have to give Starlink a thought but I suspect i'll not bother. When we drove down to Croatia last year we made a point of using camp wifi as much as possible with phone mobile data for the rest and IIRC we stayed well within allowances. I'm also conscious of the fact that Amazon Leo might be on the horizon and will provide competition for Starlink. Another plus would be that Leo is not owed by he who must not be named - the other bloke might be a bit dubious but he's Mother Theresa in comparison - of course, that might be just an impression as he's not quite as vocal as the others bloke (ie. loud mouthed and self opinionated topped off with a god complex).

There is also Lebara Mobile (assuming cell coverage)..

They do a 30day 50Gb SIM with 30Gb Euro allowance. £15

That's what we getting when we next to to france-belgium-netherlands.

Got a discount to £7.50 ATM.

..
So we dropping one of these Sims in the vans WiFi.... And having the SL for backup in areas with no cell coverage.

@Dellmasive. We've actually had lebara sims for 13 months now and until last month we it was £1.50 and 35 gb per month with 30 of them (and 100 minutes) good for EU roaming but that has since gone up to £7.80 per month which still looks like a reasonable deal! At home, the 5G data signal is invariably good whereas the voice signal sometimes gets a bit flaky. However, that's not a massive problem with phone that does wifi calling. I also remember when we drove through Montenegro and Albania a couple of years ago and because they're outside the EU, roaming didnt apply on my then EE contract so I bought a sim card in Montenegro which could be used in both countries. It lasted 30 days and cost 5¢ for 100GB and unlimited minutes.

@Dellmassive before you go away look at i.D mobile, as you can use all of your allowance in Europe. Plus the Three mobile network and their MVNO have more roaming partners in the E.U compared to the other three networks at the moment.

Totally tempting now.

Question for the roamers.
Does it work when driving? Seen some people state it only works if going less than 10mph.
Is that the case for those that have it here?

I see Starlink have a £35 100mbs Home deal in the UK currently including all equipment.
Now that getting very close to the major players like BT/EE and Sky etc

Very tempting
EE have a 900mbs service, if you have fibre your way, for £34.99. Although to be fair their slow and cheap plans start from £25.99 (74mbps) which is not cheap.

EE are taking registers of interest for satellite internet too now… Satellite Broadband from EE

I alternate between BT and Plusnet with their Full Fibre 150 packages to try and keep sub £30, so the Starlink is starting to come into the equation.....

Unless I missed it, you can only use all of your ID Mobile allowance on EU roaming if it's 30Gb or less - 30Gb is the upper limit without paying extra (which is the same as Lerbara). Happy to be proved wrong as I might have misread.

@Ayjay, You have misread it I'm afraid. Here is a screenshot from my April 2025 bill. As i.D mobile website states, you can use all of your allowance in the EU until further notice.

We used ours all over Italy last year slipped between poptop (inside) and it never failed at speed up to 120kph. The only drop in speed was after coming out of tunnels were it had to reconnect which took around 10/15 seconds at most. Over the 3 month we were very happy.

thank you - ill take a look.

a buddy of mines uses ID Mobile.

looks like 30day

£15 - 20Gb
£20 - Unlimited SIM

==============
so that still makes Lebara still cheaper for £7.50/£15 for the 50/30Gb.?

assuming you dont need more that 30Gb ?

which for a weeks trip to the EU we should be good.

but if you wanted more than the 30Gb - the The ID Mobile £20 unlimited option would be best?

I must say I'm very impressed with Starlinks use of Grok on their chat help line. I had an issue recently where my Starlink (in standby mode) packed up, Starlink are sending me a replacement free of charge.
Really good service, I'll make sure the new one doesn't get pushed off the conversatory roof by a glacier again...
Mine's been sitting unused since September, but we're heading to the Caribbean on Wednesday for a month. As I'll be remote working for some of the time, I'd planned to take the Starlink in case the local Wi-Fi is a bit poor. Powered up but no longer broadcasting WiFi :(

A frustrating 5 minutes with Grok, which kept telling me to connect to the device over wifi  , and a new one is on the way to me. Planned for delivery the day after we leave :think smile bounce:

All things being equal, Grok was far less frustrating than speaking to the Virgin Media call centre...

Make sure you get the old one sent back within 30 days, otherwise they charge in full for the new one!
