Spare wheel

Well, just tried to fit the 235/55/17. Won’t fit in mine it’s too wide even on the lower setting. Tried drilling new holes in bracket still no good! Ordered a new wheel 215/60/17 so hopefully that will fit!!

Also if you fit the bolt with the spring thing on the end, forget trying to get it back out word of warning!!

If you have a Search on the Forum with ‘spare wheel carrier’ there’s a whole load of content from previous experiences.
It may save re-inventing the wheel.

Following on from my previous post, the carrier and fixing kit I got came with circa 60mm bolts. After further research and searching it looks like you can get longer bolts, which may help getting a 235 tyre in! Can’t find any part numbers for longer bolts.

I'm thinking of going with a 205 75 16 for the spare. Should be a similar diameter to the 265 40 20 tyres on the alloys.

Anyone tried that size?

Found the answer in another thread. Seems to be a tried and tested option. Good for us 4motion'ers.

Whhhooop Whhhoooop!
It’s a done already dilemma.

I have just fitted 215/75/16, carrier dropped to lowest setting and jack to help manoeuvre it in place

Closest match to my 235/65/17 alloys and AT tyres

Just been into dealers and they do two different size bolts, 58mm and 90mm. Guess the bigger ones will help with bigger tyres although it did say for 205/215 size.

Hope that helps someone

Spare 17” wheel fitted at last. As a tip and to make it easier get the longer bolts. I’ve got the shorter ones in but with no spacers! Tyre size is a 215. IMG_5696.webpIMG_5697.webpIMG_5698.webp

I think you need to find some spacers / washers to take up the gap as at the moment the loading is on the wheel supporting bracket, the bolts could come loose.
If you put a piece of rubber between the bracket and the wheel it won’t chew the paint off.
Spare wheel theft is a thing, if you have a search on the Forum you’ll see some options for preventing this

Yeah I was thinking of getting the longer bolts so I could put the spacer on. One of the bolts is a locking wheel nut. Good idea about the rubber

That’s gives very limited protection, they just crush it and use a pipe wrench.

Just been looking at the spare safe device, is that what you were thinking? Says it doesn’t fit with a tow bar, so rules it out for me, or is there something else???

Mine’s been fitted since 2020.
There is a very cheap solution to use in addition to the standard 3 pin locking bolt; use an old hole saw or cut down 1/2” socket as a guard. I used a cheap hole saw, I cant shift it with a 12” Stilson.
As a bonus the bast@rd might slash their hand open trying to nick it.

Ah right, so you using that as a shield to protect the bolt head. I notice you have two lots of spacers on the bolts, is one steel and one plastic/rubber type sat on top of each other
From what I remember yes, OE I haven’t modified it.
Have a look on ebay, search steel bush you can specify sizes.
