Hi all, TIA

We have somE solar panels left over at work and wondered if I could use one or if it’s to powerful

Yes you can use them.

You will need a Victron 75/15.

Or. 100/20 solor mppt controller to be able to handle the power.

Them panels have.

Voc - 50v
ISC - 15A

I'd get the 100/20 to give you a power margin on 1x panel.

Isn’t the 100/20 rated at 20A charging current at 12V ? That’s 240W output , but this is a 500W panel - doesn’t it need something more beefy to use it effectively?

Simon

the 100/20 is as you say 20A max charge current. ( that panel shows 12.9A imp)

with a 100v VOC max - ( that panel shows 41.47V vmp )

12.9A x 41.47v = 530W

so the 100/20 would just deliver upto the 20A and effectively downrate the panel.

though the panel shows 12.9A max current . . . . . .

....

the next step up is the 100/30 - 440w

and the 100/50 - 700w

AGM battery charge is recommended at 10-20% so 10-20A for a 100Ah AGM.

2x 100ah would be 20-40A charge rate

a lithium can be 20-50A charge rate.

++++++++

what kinda stuff are you looking to power?

that panel looks to show . .

405W max power,

based on 10.43A imp at 38.78v vmp = 404w ( 800w/m2 irrdnc)

fwiw . . . i run two lots of 400W on two 100/30`s

Thanks for the reply’s, just looking to power some Led lights, phones etc maybe a small 12v tv if there’s enough juice.

what battery? on the 12v leisure system?

more solar and battery stuff here

.

Remember that the usual reason for a large panel isnt for the maximum possible power but rather better performance in lower light.
When your controller downrates a panel, ie the maximum possible current from the panel exceeds the controllers maximum,
forcing the controller to current-limit, its the top end you're losing - in low light conditions, ie below the controllers max I, it will still
far outperform a smaller panel :)

Haven’t got one yet, but I’ll go for the biggest I can get under the passenger seat

I haven’t done any 12v wiring in the van yet, just have the chance to get one of those panels and wondered if it was worth using and then buying the best compatible MPPT & Battery to suit

I’ll go for the biggest I can get under the passenger seat
that will be a 230Ah Lithium (effectively 5x 100ah AGMs (@50% dod)) - (@RoamerBatteries ) - Roamer LiFePO4 Gen2 230Ah Seatbase battery -- "How I Done It" --

wondered if it was worth using
- sure it is, but its very big and bulky.
- then there is the mounting? - you thinking mobile on a stand or fitting to roof?

then buying the best compatible MPPT
- the Victron MPPT units are very highly rated.

most people get solar in the range of 100w to 200w.

some people go a bit higher. . . . say 300w.

for reference . . . . 100W solar should give you 6A charge rate. (per 100w)

so 400w is 24A charge rate - ie MASSIVE solar =]
