Single to double front bench seat conversion

I'm really struggling to find a 6 seater T6.1 Kombi with these specs. There's a lot more availability of 5 seaters, so I'm thinking I could maybe buy a 5 seater and convert the single front passenger seat to a double seat. Problem is, I don't know whether it can be done safely, and if it can, how much expense/work is involved.

I've been told by a VW dealer that it's totally fine to swap the double for a single, but when I asked about swapping the airbag they said they didn't know anything about that. Obviously, I want the conversion to be 100% safe.

Current questions:

- Does the double seat fit into the existing floor mounting points?
- Does the double seat contain an airbag inside the seat? If so, can it be wired into the floor connections for the single seat without issue?
- Is the double airbag a straight swap for the single?

Any answers/advice appreciated.

Captains seat to a Double - Key information: Captive nuts for double seat may or may not be in the van already. If not, need to drill more mounting points which may have safety implications. There will also be V5 and insurance implications. Double airbag sourced from eBay, believe it's a straight swap.

Fitting Double bench seat T6.1 - Key information: "You need an extra 4 studs and fix them from underneath 1st. You can get at the 2 next to the handbrake but the other 2 require the adblu tank dropping. Make sure you have a double air bag too"

Fit front 3 seats - Key information: "Going from a basic single front passenger seat to a double usually needs a different air bag fitting in the dash board. Fixings for the seat are usually in the floor ready. Swapping the actual seat is relatively easy. Also need to consider whether your current seat has a heating element, side air bag etc as this will add complexity."

Single to double seat switch, issue - Key information: "You need to get 4 of the bolts and fix them.from underneath. You can get to 2 easily but the other 2 are under the adblue tank if you have one"

You have answered all your own questions there fella. I cant add any more info other than the airbag is in the dash only. There are no bags in the seat or base. I'm currently looking to swap my double for a single lol.

AFAIK the double has two "airbag connectors" because the system needs to know how many people are sitting and where when it fires the airbag.

So it may be that you find if the van is built as a single there isn't the connection in the loom for both.

It's more common to go the other way so the question is normally about how not to leave the then "spare" connection open circuit and get an airbag fault.

You can trick the seat pad connections so it believes both seats are occupied so both air bags will go off if they needed to

That works going double to single.

I'm not sure (as my Caravelle is obviously a single) if when it's factory built as a single if there is a second connector in the loom van side of you go single to double.

Current questions:

- Does the double seat fit into the existing floor mounting points? You will need to drill the extra mounting holes and fit nuts and washers underneath.
- Does the double seat contain an airbag inside the seat? If so, can it be wired into the floor connections for the single seat without issue? Not seen a a double seat with airbags, only occupancy sensors. If there’s no tag or marking on the side of the seat stating air bag there isn’t one.
- Is the double airbag a straight swap for the single? Already answered above.

Hope this helps
