Scaffold costs?

I’m pondering re-bedding all of our ridge tiles on the house. To do it safely I need about 30 feet of scaffolding up to the guttering on a two storey house.

Any one know what its likely to cost for a couple of weeks?

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian ..

have you looked at HSS Hire.....

I don't know the cost for a fixed scaffold. However we recently had a couple of ridge tiles replaced by an experienced local roofing contractor at very modest cost. It may well be much cheaper, and safer for yourself, to contract it out. Unless you want the challenge of course, which I fully understand.

The whole ridge needs re-bedding. If its 250 for scaffolding and 450 to pay someone then its probably not worth me doing it. We’re Midlands so labour rates hopefully reasonable.

Generally, I do everything on the house. A few years ago had a couple of extensions and I did most of the finishing apart from electrics and plastering.

Scaffolders will come and quote easily, just had two gables for a single story garage, 650.

Also have a look at dry ridge kits I just fitted my first and it was a lot easier and quicker than muck and I think should last longer.

Yeah I put a dry ridge in couple years back when finished my loft conversion really good system

Get a roofer to quote first! The scaffolding is cheaper than you realise though! And, cash up front before Xmas drops the price like you wouldn’t believe!!

I agree with this.
Roofers I use would re-bed a whole ridge in a day off a tower and ladders.
Only trouble is that ALL contractors are super busy at the moment, so finding someone to do it may be tricky.

I second getting a roofer in to quote. Most decent guys will have their own equipment to erect and repair themselves.

I'd expect to pay £600-800 for Scaff plus the repair costs down here in Oxford. Cash always works with the scaffolding boys if you were to do it yourself and wanted to keep the costs to a minimum.

I’m in no rush, none are off but several neighbours have had them blow off in last couple of years. The mortar receding @ 18 years old. With water ingress being the major cause of property damage I’d rather be pre-emptive. Also, at our last house we had 4 blow off at once, one landing on the roof of my car

In Hampshire, I wouldn’t expect to pay more than a few hundred quid to reseat a few ridge tiles!

Finding some body decent to do it will be your immediate issue, but probably the most cost effective solution

Food for thought everyone - thanks.

Our immediate neighbours needs theirs doing as well (detached houses) so maybe we’ll get a better price doing both at the same time.

As the houses are detached, there won't be much of a price-saving to be had. The scaffolders have 2xlifts and 2xdrops to do and that is the bulk of the cost. Knocking up a bit of muck and bedding in a couple of ridge tiles is not that expensive. (That said, I would suggest that you have the whole ridge re-seated rather than a piecemeal patch!)

If the roofer is using a tower he/she can wheel it around from one hose to another was my thinking.

Anyway a few options to explore!

It was prompted by another nearby house having some scaffolding put up. To my surprise the owner was up on it power washing the tiles - I thought my OCD was bad!
