As above they cannot be changed as the unit will shutdown when powered up in a vehicle it was not originally fitted to.
It is possible to bypass this but its very complicated and expensive and requires opening the unit up to modify internal parts so not really a DIY job

It's certainly an effective way of stopping the reuse of stolen units, but I wonder if it's resulted in fewer thefts, or if the scrotes who nick them aren't aware that they're unusable and nick them anyway before passing them on to buyers who aren't aware either?
