Can anyone tell me what this is next to the left tailgate hinge? Is it rust? It feels like there is some give when I press on it.IMG_8044.webp

Can you scrape a small piece off to see it better? would probably have to be ready with something to tidy up with if it is indeed a coating of preservative. My 1st thought is wrong colour for rust, unless it has been treated with inhibitor.

I tried with a plastic scraper and it doesn't budge, but then again i didn't want to damage the paint around (or underneath) it. I have had it from new (2021) and have not used any rust inhibitor on it. Do they apply some kind of adhesive between the hinge plate and the body?

It looks like e-coat. It's the hard primer that goes on after all the galv process. We see it quite often on new panels. You should be able to get it done under warranty as a defect, but for me I would put hard setting waxoil around both hinges to make it sermtrical as new paint is never the same as oem.

Thanks, i have some lanoguard left. Would that do the same as the hard setting waxoil or is it a very different product?

I think langaurd is more oil/runny base, im sure someone who has used it can confirm that. Im sure Bilt hamber do a hard clear setting waxoil, which would be better as it won't leave a mess when you clean it next. There is another one but I can't think of the name atm.

The Lano sprays are very runny but eventually cure quite hard, but not entirely so. You'll need groundsheets, goggles, mask, and clothes you won't mind throwing away afterwards (the wifes old wedding dress is ideal!)

Built Hamber UB and UC are a bit less messy to apply and leave a firm, but not solid, film. Both will creep to fill damage from stones, etc.
