Reversing camera black screen

I'm going to put this in its own thread as I don't think its a faulty product but I could be wrong.

I've brought and installed Thread 'Android Car Stereos UK' Android Car Stereos UK I replaced my camera with the one that was supplied with the unit.

I've kind of developed an issue with the camera where when going into reverse I get a black screen rather than the camera feed (parking sensors show and work). But if I turn the van off pull the key out and then turn it back on the camera works straight away. I have to take the key fully out.

I don't get a no signal error its just kind of nothing.

I'm taking power from the fuse box in the passengers side. I'll confess I don't know which fuse it is, just picked a 10a. Can anyone show which fuse I should be going from?

Does this sound like a hardware issue? Software, bad install?

What stumps me is that it will always work second time around.

I've not reached out to the supplier yet but I will.

Anyone any ideas, thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I’m in the process of fitting mine but won’t get it finished until Tuesday, I note that their instructions state to take the power from the reversing light which obviously goes live when reverse is selected- I’ll let you know how I get on

I will add it was working flawlessly for about a week and only in the last few days.

I might run it from a permanent on feed to test.

So just fitted my camera, working well when tested without the engine running but as soon as I start the engine I lose the picture and get a black screen. I don’t think it can be a fitting issue given we both have the same problem so I’m guessing a software issue, did you contact the company about this?

I had the same issue. I have LED rear lights on mine and that turned out to be the issue. Fitted a relay in line and it now works fine:

Also, just to add I'm taking my live from reverse light
Just been reading some threads on this, a relay was the suggested solution due to the reverse light feed not being a clean feed apparently (or something like that), will get a relay

My reverse light trigger was previously used for my rear view camera, to dip the camera when reverse was selected. After changing the rear lights to LEDs it started randomly dipping whilst driving. This was annoying but I never bothered to look at fixing it. I never lost the camera feed when reversing, but the camera was taking it's power from the monitor and only using the reversing light to change angle. It became more of a problem when I fitted the reversing camera due to losing the image, so had to be sorted then!

Yeah, I do have a relay but decided to go from the front (and not use the relay).

@tomosllyr so to confirm you go camera to relay then tap into the rear light? Green and black cable?

I guess it won't hurt to add the relay either way.

Thanks.

Yes. Camera attaches to "Out" on the relay. Reverse light trigger line attaches to positive "In". Negative "In" attaches to grounding point (I used the black negative from the reg plate light).

Our pioneer head unit has 'rear view camera on/off' in display settings .....just a thought .
For me, when I selected reverse the camera worked fine but as soon as I revved the engine the image cut out. It was also trying to activate the reverse camera randomly whilst driving. All caused presumably by voltage disturbance because of the LED lights. Works fine with the relay in place. I don't know if the same thing can happen with the halogen lights?

I ran led rear lights for years and no problem with reverse cam , no relay needed. (Pioneer HU)
Presumably it is camera related rather than headunit? As I've mentioned above I had similar symptoms with the rear view camera that was using the trigger wire before the reverse camera, and that system was completely independent of the OEM headunit I had at the time.

Added thr relay and all is working.

But then it always seems to work in testing / driveway. Only fails out in the field.

Will see over the next few drives but fingers crossed.

@tomosllyr or @jimc91

I'm still having issues with my camera. Is there any chance you could post any photos of how you have wired camera to relay to reverse feed? Would be very much appreciated.

I'm going Camera red cable to relay out, red relay to reverse green and black. Camera black to relay out black, relay in black to reverse brown. Is that right or am I being a knobhead?

Sounds right to me. When you say reverse brown, do you mean the reverse light?

I should be able to take the lining off to double check and take some photos at the weekend if yoy want.

Yeah using the brown cable in the rear light which I figure is a gound. Photos would be amazing if its not too much of a pain in the arse. Really appreciated.

The rear view mirror in my T6.1 is useless but there is a reversing camera whose image shows up on the central display when in reverse. Is there a way to summon this up on command, i.e. when not in reverse? Is there a known wire that runs from the reversing light to the central display that I could intercept and bring out to a switch, perhaps?
