Replacement second hand engines needed- anyone know where to go?

Hi all,

Minty went into the garage to get the aux belt changed as it had snapped. Long story short- bits of the belt had got in the cam belt and it killed my engine 😭

They can fit a replacement engine, but I have to source a second hand one. I have all the codes- and there's only one potential match on eBay and it's in Germany........

Does anyone know a reliable place to source one? With a sensible guarantee at least? Based South West but would be paying for delivery so that probably doesn't matter.

If I go down the Germany route, does it matter if it's a left hand drive vehicle as opposed to my right hand one? CXGA

Many thanks

You could try Darkside Developments or Retro Resus. I would think the cheapest option is to do an exchange and let them install, obviously part of the negotiation.

Did they actually strip down and find out exactly what failed on your engine? These engines normally don't destroy themselves when a cam belt fails, it may only be 3 or 4 snapped cam followers, and normally at worst spun lobes on the camshafts. Bent valves are rare, but easily replaceable.

Yeah they got into the engine. The aux belt wrapped around the cam belt and shredded and bits of belt got into the engine. It started up, they moved it a few metres and then it died. They said we are lucky it didn't happen on the motorway because it would have been a really nasty accident

So they didn't find out what has failed, just guessed and assumed a new engine required.
They need to have the cam cover off etc, and do a compression test, but it sounds like this is beyond them....

The cambelt may have been damaged but it can’t get into the engine under any circumstances. @bluezie has a point

I had a camshaft (pulley) failure at full speed on a hilly Swiss highway with one of my Renaults, about in 2004.
Bang. Pressed the the clutch by instinct. Slowly stopped on the emergency lane. That was all.

The Swiss Automobile Club towed me out of the Higway with a rope at midnight (!).
Of course the motor then was in bad shape (camshaft, 2 bent valves, head pulled and rebuilt) but it could be economically saved and went on soldiering for another 80K Km afterwards.

I concur that a second opinion on your engine may help.

Has anyone found an endoscope that fits down the glow plug port yet - less than 9mm?

I think its because the auxiliary belt gets forced in through the crankshaft seal (after snapping due to the forces exerted) ,behind the crankshaft pulley, interfering with the cambelt, and causing engine damage.

EDIT , or rather pieces of said shredded belt

Ah yes, more plastic. Lego will be making engines soon

Agree with the above, speak to retro resus and see what they say, based Taunton way so not too far from you

Thank you so much. We've been in contact with retro resus and are making plans. Wouldn't have known about them without this.
