As I’m not keeping the plate and don’t want to
Pay £80 to retain it, apparently I have to write a letter to DVLA informing them, noting the number on the V5 and then I wait for a new V5 with the original plate to arrive in the post!?

You may be able to claim the £80 back if you give up the right to reassign it.

Thanks. But i haven’t paid £80. I brought the vehicle with the private plate on it

Yes, but you'll need to pay £80 to remove and retain it, then claim the money back if you surrender the right to use it.

Apparently I can write to the DLVA stating that I don’t want the plate and they will send a V5.

It’s a but faffy so maybe like you say, pay the £80 and get the refund later
